I have watched the theatrical cut of Kenneth Lonergan's "Margaret" several times between its brief original release in September and this spring. If you know me, I've probably sung its praises to you many times. I love it, and at this point, I have the entire movie pretty much memorized.

Today is the 82nd birthday of one of the greatest motion picture actresses, if not THE greatest. Her Eminence Gena Rowlands was never a movie star. Her widest-known success as an actress will probably be "The Notebook." I'd never dis that movie, because I really do love it, but let's take a little look back at some of Gena Rowlands' greater screen moments.

Warning: Do not look at these pictures of Tilda Swinton if you plan on operating heavy machinery today. When I saw them for the first time yesterday morning, I fell into a Tilda coma that I don't think I have fully recovered from yet. Honestly, I'm on the fence about Candy Magazine, the notorious "transsexual fashion" publication, that hasn't actually put any trans people on its cover, but holy cow. Why Tilda Swinton hasn't competed on Drag Race is just beyond me, because this Xevi Muntane editorial is the "epitome of charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent."

Remember when the Tribeca Film Festival hosted the World Premiere of "New York Minute," the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen vehicle? The U.S. premiere of "The Avengers" at BMCC Tribeca on Saturday falls into place as Tribeca's 2nd most egregious bow towards movie stars regardless of their merit. And that's sad. I can think of countless other major films in need of visibility who would have no doubt been aided by a gala slot. What does "The Avengers" gain from a Tribeca gala? It's already one of the most anticipated movies of 2012.

Being a gay film person in New York has its perks, one of which was being able to follow the production of a movie we all felt would be really important. Ira Sachs' "Keep The Lights On" was the movie, it was the summer of 2011, and we were all excited to have a gay-themed story told in a big way by one of New York's greatest gay filmmakers. It seemed that, at some point, everyone I know took part in the film somehow. When I watch the film now, I lose track of the number of friends' faces that pop up in the background. (Yes, I'm also in it at one point, but you can hardly see me.)

Alan Cumming was famous (and out) for quite a while now, but it's been a while since he's been front and center. "Any Day Now," playing this week at the Tribeca Film Festival, is a subtle, simple showcase. It's the story of a mismatched gay couple in the 70's who find themselves taking care of a child with Down's Syndrome and fighting for their parental rights, fighting institutionalized and socialized homophobia. This decades-old screenplay finally hits the screen with style, humor, and heartache.
Something that is starting to change in movies is that we're seeing more actors coming out than ever before, and suddenly we're seeing more gay stories being told. In the past, you know, it was always a straight celebrity getting acclaim for playing gay and being risky.
