The 2012 Nashville Film Festival Award Winners

The Nashville Film Festival (NaFF) announced the award winners for this year’s festival at a luncheon in the festival’s Liberty Tent this morning. Matthew Gordon’s The Dynamiter, the story of a troubled 14-year-old boy who comes to realize what truly matters to him, won the Narrative Competition Grand Jury Prize and David Fine’s Salaam Dunk, a profile of the joys and challenges experienced by the American University of Iraq’s women’s basketball team, won the Documentary Competition Grand Jury Prize.

If y’all read my preceding posts about the Nashville Film Festival (NaFF), you already know that it’s one of my favourite film festivals—and that Nashville is one of my favourite cities to visit. Not surprisingly, I’m disheartened that today—Day 5 of the festival—is my last full day here (although I’m sure my liver feels differently, especially after a night of honky tonkin’ on Lower Broadway).

There was no shortage of films to see on the first day of the Nashville Film Festival (NaFF), which kicked off yesterday at the Regal Green Hills Stadium in Nashville, but my opening night film choice was easy: Beauty is Embarrassing, Neil Berkeley’s refreshing and amusing documentary about the American artist, cartoonist and illustrator Wayne White, which premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March.

The Nashville Film Festival (NaFF) not only programs some of the best short films from around the world, it is one of only 24 film festivals in the United States designated as an Academy Award-qualifying festival for short films, meaning that winners of the narrative and animation short competitions are automatically qualified for Academy Award consideration.

Most people think of country music or the Robert Altman film when they think of Nashville, but for eight days in April each year, Music City (specifically, the area known as Green Hills) is home to the Nashville Film Festival, one of the oldest film festivals in the United States and one of my personal favorites.

The Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) announced their line-up for this year's festival yesterday and among their selections are some of my favourite short films from this and last year—including a film which I predict will (or at least should) be nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at next year's Academy Awards: Curfew The film, which was written and directed by and stars Shawn Christensen, is about a young man named Richie who, at the lowest point of his life, receives a phone call from his estranged sister who asks him to look after his nine-year old niece for a few hours. Not surprisingly, it recently won the prestigious International Audience Award at the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival (arguably the most important short film festival in the world). Tommy: What do you think? Do you think love lasts forever? Hedwig: No, but this song does. Many readers of The Lost Boys will be familiar with that very funny line from one of my favourite films—Hedwig and the Angry Inch (which, as many of you will know, was written, directed and stars the inimitable John Cameron Mitchell). Tommy and Hedwig are referring to I Will Always Love You, of course—the song famously written and recorded twice by Dolly Parton (it was a number one hit for her in both 1974 and 1982) and made even more famous by Whitney Houston. I know most of you have heard it enough for one lifetime, but after watching this 2002 performance of Dolly singing I Will Always Love You on a popular Swedish television show earlier today, I feel compelled to share it. I hope at least a few of you can still enjoy it!
