The Dutch Approach To "Jersey Shore"

Last night I found myself wasting a good chunk of my night glued to a television show that wasn't even in a language I understood: "Oh Oh Cherso," which is essentially the Dutch version of "Jersey Shore."

It's only been nine years since the Copenhagen International Film Festival (or CPH: DOX, as it is almost exclusively referred) began its inaugural year. Directly before International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) - essentially the main staple of the European doc fest circuit - the chances of CPH: DOX rising to their ranks in the short time since seemed highly unlikely. But CPH: DOX is not your grandparents' film festival.

So I spent the past 4 days in Lisbon, Portugal - which I've blogged nothing about if only because I wanted to enjoy every moment of my time there. A local said to me upon arrival: "You either love Lisbon... or you really like it." Count me in the former.

For the third year in a row I've headed over to London for the BFI London Film Festival, where I'll be for the next 10 days. Though in a twist over previous years, I've decided to stay in Europe for a bit afterwards, and will be working from all over my favourite continent for the next two months. So for what it's worth, this blog will reflect that over the next little while in a throwback to the hobo tours of yore. Frankly, I'm a bit concerned my mind, soul and liver are no longer capable of these kind of aimless traveller shenanigans (I'm getting frighteningly domestic in my old age), but there's no going back now, so...

A Brief Love Letter To Copenhagen & CPH: DOX

I spent most of this first full day back from Denmark writing this beast of a dispatch on CPH: DOX that has drained most of capability for word making, so bear with me... But it seems unreasonable for me to not offer at least a brief more personal note to supplement the bigger piece. Because CPH: DOX truly is a film festival of the future, and I felt very honored to be on their jury and to get to have 6 days with that festival and in that city. I need to definitely thank the folks behind the festival and my fellow jurors for aiding in making that so true.

After five rather perfect days and nights in Denmark, I've arrived back on the other side of the pond after 14 hours of mind-numbing travel that began by heading to the airport straight from a rowdy bar at 4am, and included falling asleep in Brussels Airport and nearly missing my connecting flight in a ridiculously stressful little ordeal. As you can see, I blogged little to none while I was in Copenhagen, mostly due to the fact that that city and the festival I was there for - CPH:DOX - offered too much for me to spend anytime away from it sucked into internetia. And while I'm in no position to properly recount my time there with the braindead headspace I'm dealing with right now, I'll make sure by Monday night to give Copenhagen and CPH:DOX the online love letter they deserve.

I'm heading off to Copenhagen tonight for 6 days on a jury at CPH: DOX, what I've heard is one of the most innovative and exciting film festivals around these days (in a city that's always been super high on list of places to visit). Technically a documentary film festival, CPH DOX has clearly made great strides at stepping outside that box, incorporating experimental films that work in the spirit of documentaries ("Trash Humpers" won the fest's big award last year, par example... and now Harmony Korine is back this year to curate a program for the fest), giving music a huge presence (Animal Collective is programming what looks to be an amazing bunch of films), and finding new ways to throw a party (I missed their opening weekend party that took place on a metro car traveling 7 hours from Copenhagen to Norway).

One final Icelandic note... Last night as I getting ready to head back North American way, I got to experience a very different side of the country as some 8,000 people (or like 7% of Reykjavik) gathered outside parliament - which was essentially a block from my hotel - to protest the government's response to the domestic economic situation, as many households face mounting debts and foreclosures. It was largely peaceful, but it was certainly passionate. A local explained to me that essentially everyone in the country support the protests, and "it was about time" they started going down.
