A Brief Love Letter To The Reykjavik Film Festival

I've had an intensely lovely seven days here in Reykjavik, few of which I've noted on here in large part due to the fact I've wanted to spend every free minute sucking in the magic. I've written more extensively about the film festival's hospitality for indieWIRE here, but let me just expand a bit in a less journalist manner. Because Reykjavik is a fabulous film festival and a fabulous town in a fabulous country. And if you ever get a chance to visit any or all of the three, seriously go out of your way. The festival is remarkably intimate and well-organized, and gives you the perfect summer camp vibe that only the best smaller film festivals pull off, and Reykjavik takes it to an extreme by taking said summer camp to the President of Island's house where said President shakes your hand and lets you roam freely through his entire home. And then on top of that, to have that vibe in a town/country like Reykjavik/Iceland, which is as magical as Bjork has led us all to believe all these years, is severe icing. This city has some of the wildest weekends on earth, its residents are ridiculously charming (except the one that stole my blackberry), and its nearby countryside gives you endless arrays of rainbows, volcanoes, geysers, waterfalls and glaciers. It's a bit stranger than paradise, but that doesn't mean it's not amazing (and Jim Jarmusch would certainly agree - he was the guest of honor at the festival and seemed like he was having a total ball).

Kirstin Wiig's amazing Weekend Update ditty from a year or so ago has been in my head for the past 3 hours as I await my flight to a place I've always dreamed of going: Iceland. Thanks in large part to a Bjork obsession in my tweens, I've always been kind of obsessed with the land of fishing, dragons and screaming, and I'm so, so ridiculously excited to spend the next week there. More as it develops, but I might just choose to feel the magic and avoid the blog, so be warned...

Goodbye To Berlin

I haven't exactly been super blogger the past two weeks, and with good reason... I've been in lazing around in Berlin and enjoying the world's most pleasurable city for all it has to offer. Sadly, after two days of no sleep in a poorly planned Berlin->London->Glasgow->Toronto airport tour of pure hell, I've returned for the remainder of the summer, which will be a hectic make-up for the complete lack of productivity or responsibility that was Berlin. It was totally worth it, though, and here's a few photos that suggest why:

After seven jam-packed days of British debauchery, I've arrived in my favourite city in the entire world to spend 12 days wanting to never leave (thanks to Ryanair, which despite, sure, costing next to nothing, is such a fucking nightmare to deal with I'm paying the extra $100 next time). I'm too lazy to post London-related photos, so for anyone who cares here's a link to loads to them.

From London, with love.... Where I celebrated with a good thousand Canadians, ending the night by singing 'Oh Canada' on stage with 10 or 12 Canadian musicians. Best Canada Day ever.

Scenes From a London Pub as England Loses a World Cup Match

I made my from Edinburgh to London yesterday and headed straight from my train to this pub (infamous for being where Jack The Ripper found his victims) to watch a bunch of Londoners freak right out as their World Cup team lost to Germany. Here's a clip from when they thought they scored, only to have the ref not call it (despite it obviously being past the goal line). You can't see it very well, but at the very beginning one testosterone heavy Brit accidentally threw his beer at me:

Scenes From a Pilgrimage Reunion

The two videos below were basically the excuse for dozens of us from all over the world to descend on Edinburgh for what turned out to be a mini-reunion of sorts from last year's "A Pilgrimage", the festival/summer camp that I've gone about on here many a time. Both Mark Cousins and Tilda Swinton seemed very touched that so many folks made such an effort to come down for what turned into 3 days of reunion, from late night gallivanting to the below flash mob dance to an exclusive-to-pilgrims viewing of a fantastic documentary-in-progress by Matt Hulse on last year's event. Anyway, I figured I'd share a few pics from the past few days, which have left me exhausted but were obviously beyond fantastic:
