A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Montreal artist Vincent Chevalier for Nightlife Magazine. We discussed his ever-growing body of work, tumblr, and a forthcoming artist’s residency at the Banff Center. For the sake of brevity, some of our dialogue didn’t make it into the Nightlife article. Here are some “out-takes,” so to speak, of my discussion with the artist.

The sky outside is a pitiable grey, I’ve got procrastinator’s angst, and too much coffee angers up the blood. So, after seeing Zouch Magazine’s list of songs to listen to while crying in the shower, I thought I’d make my own collection of depresso tunes.

While I am a big fan of nature—especially things in nature that have bewildering toxins, multiple rows of serrated teeth, or a penchant for parasitism—I still really dig this clip of Kembra Pfahler, who identifies as an “anti-naturalist.”

One of the many benefits of being pervy is that my escapades and observances give me fodder to write about. As mentioned in my Lost Boy bio, I’ve written about audio in porn; I’ve also written about book-lickers, foot fetishists, the difference between bears and otters, and the powerful aphrodisiac otherwise known as George Michael.

I am a hustler of words living and writing in Montreal. I’m a regular contributor to Nightlife Magazine, Lickety Split Smut Zine, and 2B Magazine. My essay on pornographic audio “The Signal is Jammed” appears in the 2009 Arsenal Pulp Press anthology I Like it Like That. My work is also featured in Xtra, Cliteraturejournal, Empty Mirror Books, Subversions: Journal of Gender and Sexuality, Lambda Literary, and Broken Pencil Magazine. In grade six, all of the other boys dreamed of being hockey players, but I wanted to be Annie Lennox. Because of this, I often write about the intersections of music, desire, and identity. In the winter of 2007, I began the Sound Sex Project, an archival work that examines the kinds of music that people use during sex. I completed my M.A., My Body is a Mix Tape: Music and Desire in the Sound Sex Project, in the Media Studies program at Concordia University in 2008. I’m also interested in spiders and cephalopods, and to satiate my fauna fascination, I co-author the blog Running With Sharks.
