For anyone who could do with a genre-defying, heartbreaking, utterly beautiful piece of writing at the end of a long Monday… here is one. If the title alone doesn't seduce you, I assure you this is worth reading. It just might make you cry.

I don't know why this is suddenly doing the rounds a year after it was broadcast - but this montage of Miriam Margolyes' appearance on the Graham Norton Show is surely what is known as "chat show gold". This is what happens when a formerly in-demand actress gets fewer and fewer opportunities to show off as she gets older.

There has been a lot of excellent criticism and discussion elsewhere on the Invisible Children Kony campaign, which I won't add to here. But this video - by always entertainingly subversive British journalist Charlie Brooker - is definitely worth watching, if only for the utterly insane clips it shows of Invisible Children's previous campaign videos. I'm not fundamentally opposed to emotionally manipulative tactics in campaign videos - better that we see and process the tactics on screen, I always feel. But these videos cast Invisible Children's project in a totally different and frankly terrifying light.

Time flies when you're not blogging, it seems, for it was only in my last post that I was announcing my intention to make a short film, and now I have shot it.

I went to see War Horse last night. I wasn't sure what to expect - from a scholarly perspective, I had been well-drilled in the Knegtian school, which I felt had prepared me to at least enjoy the film. What I left with was far more unexpected.

By the skin of my teeth I'm sticking to the monthly update pattern that has unofficially been established by this no doubt gripping and widely read series on my exploits as a film maker. In fact, here in London there are mere minutes til it's February - so I'd best keep a long story short.

Over the past few days I read two brilliant and very different pieces discussing art and the importance of preserving its integrity. It's easy to forget just how and why art can be important, especially in the film world, in Oscar season, when so much cinema is self-important, and wrongfully so.

I jest you not: how David Foster Wallace changed my life

I have been meaning to write about this all week. In the end it took a pensive mood and an evening alone to get it done, but that seems appropriate.

"It changed my life". Hard for it to not sound like a sales pitch. But as I lay that claim, let it be clear that I feel older and sadder - as much clueless as wise, depressed as inspired - for having read the brilliant, baffling Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. You may doubt your interest in learning at modest length how exactly an individual book wrought such change upon me. That is fine - let me only promise to conclude by explaining why I feel such a blog post is worthy of a reader's time.

You know that idiot who, reunited with his MacBook following a winter break in an exotic culture, feels moved to trot out all the homespun wisdom and shining insight he has gleaned from his glorious voyage? Well, I'm just back from two weeks in Cuba.
