so at midnight tonight I (oliver) will be boarding a bus on a trip to return to my hometown for the first time in over a month. I spent all of my september beginning life as a university student in the unreal city of montreal, and this canadian thanksgiving weekend will be my inaugural stopping by as an "independent adult". although my stay in london ontario will only stretch the expanse of four days, I still don't know how to feel about the idea of revisiting the roots I so fortunately was able to stray from, but still so deeply miss (in a wow-I-really-want-to-be-a-kid-again sort of way)? so for any of those in the same boat as me, here are a few nice songs to provide a soundtrack to your homecoming…

Yesterday saw release of the new music video by perhaps the biggest thing to happen to the internet youth scene/indie music industry coalition this year. Grimes’ video for the single “Genesis”, from her January album Visions, features the singer in desert, beach, and city landscapes, swinging around swords and flails, stroking a snake in the back of a limousine (the same snake that accompanied Brit Spears onstage in her 2001 VMAs performance of I’m A Slave 4 U), and dancing with her pink-haired companion in a metallic suit. The usual. While the video totally strays from my would-be visual interpretation of the dreamy track, and frankly feels in some sense like a collaboration between Harmony Korine and Lady Gaga, it showcases Grimes’ style and bizarre grace just as well as the video for her first single “Oblivion” did. And although she’s claimed before to hate being called “cute”, this video makes it so hard to resist. The girl is adorable.

Last night on his personal Tumblr, the 24 year-old OFWGKTA rapper posted this intensely personal and poetic depiction of the first time he fell in love. Two weeks before his solo debut album is set to release, and just days after Anderson Cooper's announcement to the public, awaking this rainy July morning I couldn't help but find myself overjoyed to notice a little rainbow appearing behind those clouds . . . a huge congratulations to Frank Ocean, and here's hoping the rest of the month has in store such delightful surprises as this.

Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers"

He's the notorious auteur behind cult classics "Gummo", "Julien Donkey-Boy", "Kids" (as screenwriter), and most recently 2009's "Trash Humpers"... and yet, Harmony Korine's upcoming work seems to be producing the most controversy of all his films. "Spring Breakers" features Disney teen stars Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars), Heather Morris (Glee), Rachel Korine (Harmony's wife), and James Franco, who was involved in Korine's "Rebel", a 20-minute instillation piece paying homage to the James Dean classic "Rebel Without A Cause".
With a synopsis reading "four college girls land in jail after robbing a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation, then find themselves bailed out by a drug and arms dealer who wants them to do some dirty work", Spring Breakers might be the wacky filmmaker's first real foray into the mainstream, causing worry among some fans who fear the notion of their arthouse hero selling out. But I believe it's safe to say we need worry not: Korine has always been a daring artist examining the American essence, and I would not be surprised if this turned out to be his most absurd, irregular work yet. Oliver: We saw it on the Thursday of TIFF right? We had been there for about a week, seeing 2 or 3 films everyday, so we were pretty exhausted by that point.
Derek: I found it interesting that of all the different movies that sort of washed over me, I can think of at least five that I really can't remember the contents of. Yet I can recall the details of the Turin Horse quite clearly... although, that probably also speaks to the film's repetitive nature.
Oliver: Definitely. We had seen our fair share of films that really experimented with cinematic form, like Sokurov's "Faust" for example, but The Turin Horse just kind of blew everything else out of the water, at least for me. I had been speaking with a filmmaker earlier in the festival, and I told him we were seeing it. He said to me that Tarr's films absolutely had to be experienced on the big screen. Which sparked an initial anticipation.
