I launched this blog a little over 5 years ago and have had so, so much fun with it. But I can't be a lost boy forever (though don't take this as a suggestion I'm anything close to a "found man" today... more like semi-lost man-boy), and honestly I've been phoning it in a bit the past little while anyway, largely out of the simple fact that I don't have the time and energy I did back when it started. So after 2,392 posts, I'm letting it go. When things you once loved doing start feeling like just another notch on a to-do list, it's time to re-assess. Though I will definitely miss the occasional inspired opportunity to make a silly list or inappropriate rant.

For what it's worth, here lies my 10 favourite songs of 2012 (which follows #50-41, #40-31, #30-21 and #20-11).
It continues trends throughout the entire list (Canadians, Swedes, guilty pleasure pop, fun indie rock, breakup songs, empowerment anthems, etc) and is capped off with the two artists that as far as I'm concerned gave the most important contributions to music in 2012: Frank Ocean and Fiona Apple. Each were represented once previously on the list (with Ocean's incredibly catchy cautionary tale on materialism, 'Lost' and with Apple's scathing and intense post-breakup ballad 'Regret') but they come up again at #2 and #1 with two of the most lyrically gorgeous songs I've heard in some time (just above what I almost made #1 -- the year's ultimate breakup/empowerment song and perhaps its most catchy from my new favourite Swedes).

A second Thanksgiving gift (even though myself and the gift's maker are both turkey-free in Canada tonight) care of my very talented cousin Aaron DeGroot. Inspired by the scores of John Williams, David Arnold and Danny Elfman, it's a movie-less score to a non-existent action film. Probably an odd fit, but why not crank it while you Americans clean up the Thanksgiving dinner dishes.

The Swedes sure know how to make music videos (see this), and the hypnotic, beautifully weird video for Kate Boy's "Northern Lights" is very obviously no exception. It's also an amazing song that's perfect for chilly walks:

A few weeks back I mentioned how Kate McKinnon is one of the (few) reasons I'm still watching "Saturday Night Live" (or, "Sunday Morning Streamed," as it were). And she only made that more clear this weekend with another incredible Ellen DeGeneres impression in a sketch parodying her talk show (Anne Hathaway didn't quite win me with her Katie Holmes impression, but whatever). Just in case you were wondering. That's 48,797 people (a number that will rise with final counts). And that's despite her name only being on the ballots in a couple of states. In California, she had 36,914 voters -- or 0.4% of the vote.
