I'm sad to not be in Toronto as the Pink Triangle Press celebrates its 40th anniversary, which is currently being commemorated in an issue of PTP's current Xtra magazine. Beginning back in 1971 with iconic Canadian queer magazine The Body Politic, the Pink Triangle Press has been a remarkable contributor to the advancement of queer rights in the country, and continues to be. When I wrote a book on the history of said movement, it proved a remarkable research tool.

The Best Pornographic Gay Hipster Short Film Has Been Made Into a Feature... And Here's The Teaser

Well over a year ago I posted a blog entry about the 14-minute "demo" of Travis Matthews’ in-the-works project "I Want Your Love." It was described it to me by a friend as "hipster guys having sex with each other and talking," and essentially that was the case: Two facial-hair heavy guys spend 5 minutes talking about sex and boys over a glass or two of wine - and then they have explicit sex for the remaining 9 minutes. And while it was definitely all very hot, it was also remarkably relatable (for some of us anyway), honest and insightful... which gives me high hopes for the feature, which officially has a teaser trailer (which is definitely NSFW). The film doesn't yet have a release date (one assumes it's eyeing the 2012 festival circuit), but until then we can utilize these 100 seconds of promise:

Zachary Quinto Comes Out of the Closet

"Star Trek 2" will feature the first openly gay Spock, as Zachary Quinto has officially declare his homosexuality in a small step forward for the ridiculously closeted world of male actors in America. Honestly, I suspect will this do more good than bad to Quinto's career as he's not really a huge star and has more to gain than lose (look at what happened Neil Patrick Harris). But hopefully when his career doesn't implode it inspires a few more folks to join him. How many out male American actors are there? Cheyenne Jackson, Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Lane and now Quinto (I'm not counting the Brits.. they do a far better job). Considering acting is - admit it - a kind of gay thing to do, the fact that something like .01% of established male actors in America are openly gay suggests there's loads more where Quinto came from. But seriously, good for him. Even if he was kidding only a few at this point...

Next Tuesday in Toronto, I'll be co-hosting the second annual STIFF @ TIFF (oh so clever, we). Any of you that happen to be in Toronto, feel free to stop by. It's happening at Wrong Bar (1279 Queen Street West) on the night of Tuesday the 13th. It's a celebration of queer + sex positive films + filmmakers at the Toronto International Film Festival.... Not to mention a celebration of Michael Fassbender being naked a lot in "Shame" AND "A Dangerous Method," and most importantly: a new camp classic being born in Madonna's "W.E." (there's all kinds of ways to get stiff at TIFF!) The event will featureGuy Maddin's muse Lexi Tronic, with the DJ delights of Miss Margot and Colin D and a big welcome to special guest DJ Sheldon Larry and the cast of TIFF title "Leave It On The Floor." We also have a 4am liquor license, so please reconsider early press & industry screenings and/or prepare to call in sick to work. RSVP here.

"Fun" Fact About Queer Canadian History #1

Given Friday is Canada Day and that it's Pride Week in Toronto, it seemed only appropriate to launch this little series of fun (or, actually, mostly horrifying) facts. Though I must admit reasoning behind it reeks of self-promotion. Over the past two years or so, I've been working on an introductory academic text book - a sort of "Queer Canada For Dummies" - that documents the history of Canada's queer rights movement. It comes out in the fall, but I figured why not throw a few teensy excerpts up on this blog in anticipation (for all 3 of you Lost Boy readers interested in this topic!). Fun fact #1? The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the bizarro lengths they went to keep gays from being federal employees back in the 1960s and 1970s:

Toronto Embarrasses Itself (Again) With Intensely Lame Pride Promo

How did the folks at Toronto Pride ever think that this was not going to ridiculed as a stereotype-ridden poor excuse for a promo ad? Even if it was intended to be campy fun (and god I hope it was), the jokes are poorly written and stale, and the production value doesn't exactly scream "one of the largest gay pride festivals in the world." For a financially strained organization, you sure did waste some money:
