In (dis?)honor of the release of Madonna's "W.E." this weekend, both Mark and Peter are offering up their top 10 Madonna song's, with a little personal commentary to boot.
Yes, today offically marks Madonna's most ambitious foray into filmmaking with the theatrical release of "W.E.," but I can't imagine the day when less than 95% of the reason I've collectively cared about Madonna in my lifetime has to do with anything besides her music (and likely her pre-2006 music).
My relationship with Madonna's music started somewhere in the earlyish-1990s when I blindly ordered "The Immaculate Collection" via my still unpaid stint as a member of the Columbia House Music Club.
As a 7 year old, I wore the shit out of that CD by dancing around my parents' living room belting out the lyrics to essentially every song (except "Borderline," which remains my least favourite Madonna single). This continued on for many years, with the #1 song I ever requested at high school dances overwhelmingly being "Like a Prayer" (I still do so at weddings).
By her Ray of Light/Music era (which is more golden than some give her credit for), I was old enough to at least somewhat appreciate what Madonna was actually trying to do: She was an icon of individuality, sex positivity and self-empowerment. Like Lady Gaga, except more authentic.
Yes, I fear the final nail in the coffin for my appreciation of Madonna's music happened the day I bought "Hard Cardy." But that's no reason to disregard the 20+ years of pop magic Ms. Madge brought to our ears. So with that in mine, here's my 10 favourite Madonna songs.
1. Like a Prayer
2. Ray of Light
3. Express Yourself
4. Vogue
5. Music
6. Frozen
7. Erotica
8. Into The Groove
9. Hung Up
10. Rain
