This evening, at Uferstudios in Berlin, my good friend—and one of my favourite artists and collaborators—will present the culmination of two years of study, research, practice and collaboration as a Master of Arts student in the SODA (Solo/Dance/Authorship) program at HZT Berlin.
Zoja Smutny’s THIS I LOVE YOU THING is a performance piece that examines a lover’s discourse—specifically, “the relationship between the eroticism of writer and reader, as well as that of the performer and audience”. As her colleague Yair Vardi wrote in SODA’s New Performance Works 2011 publication, Zoja “has a unique ability to mix and blur ‘the artistic’ and ‘the real’ until a point where the observer no longer bothers or cares to maintain this difference”.
Furthermore, her body of work is characterized by a deep humanity, curiosity and intensity that resonates both live and on film.
To Zoja: I marvel at your brilliance, your talent and your passion. Congratulations and merde! Tonight will be great.
