Twin Trope

The first time I started to watch Zebra Katz’ video Ima Read, I shut it off after about thirty seconds. I certainly don’t consider myself a lightweight when it comes to gore flicks, but Ima Read instills an almost tactile sense of unease or fear. The grain of the image, the empty corridors, the twins, the expressionless masks—all of these elements combine to create a creepy atmosphere that nods to the horror film aesthetic. Because the song is so infectious, I had to keep going back for more, and I learned to love the video. It’s gorgeous—in a George A. Romero kind of way.

I realize we’re a long way off from Halloween, but here’s a selection of great music videos that invoke the macabre or reference the cinematic genre of horror.

Zebra Katz featuring Njena Reddd Foxxx — Ima Read

Peaches featuring Iggy Pop — Kick It

Aphex Twin — Come To Daddy

The Dead Weather — Die By the Drop

En Vogue — Whatever

Nine Inch Nails — Help Me I Am In Hell

@peterknegt thinks that people who don't have sex are absurd. That's because he is a gay man who can't say no.
