In the midst of considerable publicity surrounding his coming out last week, Frank Ocean performed the song "Bad Religion" on Jimmy Fallon last night and holy shit was it ever good. Off his new album "Channel Orange" (available on iTunes today), the song features the lyrics that at least in part led to his coming out (they discuss his unrequited love for a man), and it was likely the first time most people ever even heard it performed.
And what an introduction: Ocean brings everything he has to it, which is aided by the fact that it's a gorgeous and affecting song to begin with. There's no better way to quiet controversy than by simply showing everyone how remarkably talented you are. And it seems to me it all marks a truly unprecented (and pretty darn beautiful) moment in the history of queer representation in popular culture.
