Who Is Xavier Dolan?

Last night in Cannes, Montrealer Xavier Dolan surprised many by winning three of four prizes in the DIrector's Fortnight for his film "I Killed My Mother." Dolan stars in, wrote and directed the semi-autobiographical film which is about a 16-year-old boy just discovering his homosexuality and fighting with his mother, who constantly annoys him ("C.R.A.Z.Y." 2009?). It apparently got a massive standing ovation (10 minutes, by the estimate of the friend I know who was there), and I suspect this is the beginning of a healthy life for the film on the festival circuit... I'd be shocked if it isn't in the Toronto lineup (and personally disappointed... I'm kind of dying to see it at this point).

He has a really interesting bio... He was born in March, 1989, making him barely 20 years old. He's the son of Quebec actor Manuel Tadros, and has been acting since he was 12 (this seems like a bit of a trend in Canada... think Sarah Polley and Jacob Tierney, both child actors that went on to direct acclaimed works in their 20s). He was the star of Jean Coutu commercials (a big Quebec drugstore... I'm actually in Montreal right now and many folks I know you grew up here remember the commercials vividly), recently starred in "Martyrs," and does the Quebecois dubbing for the characters of Ron Weasley in Harry Potter, Justin in High School Musical 3, and Jacob Black in Twilight, among others.

And, well, not to take the superficial route.. but he's also gay and really cute:

Just saw "J'ai tué ma mère". (I know, I'm late.)I knew I would like it but am pleasantly surprised. I LOVED IT. It's story that's been told but it is presented in such a modern light: "You live in modern mad times but with the poetry of eras past" (not sure if I remember the quote exactly). Uncanny thing, I had been told that Xavier looks like me when I was that age. The hair. The clothing style. The face. I guees its true, but I sure don't have that awe inspiring talent. Bravo!

I met Xavier 3 years ago on actor Hugolin Chevrette's 30th birthday! He asked me if it would be at all possible to shoot his movie; with the budget I made then..., he did not have the money to do it; so he looked for producers that he found but neither Sodec or Telefilm responded to the financial request to help produce the film! At 2008 FIFM (Festival des films du monde), he asked me if I would consider helping him to produce the film..., I did! After reading the script, looking for crew and equipment..., I asked Daniel Morin to request AGAIN Sodec to finance the post production of the film...
This is how it happened! I believed in the script and in Xavier, Daniel Morin accepted to join me in this adventure... 7 months later... I was in Cannes so proud of Xavier and his first movie.

Was Dolan's mother Irish? I suspect so. Dolan
is the Anglecised form of, O'Dobhailen, a name
recorded in, Galway (ancestral home of, Che
Guevara) since the 12th Century (MacLysaght)
The Dolan name is also popular in, Athlone,
Leitrim, Cavan (ancestral home of Edgar Alan
    Poe)
    Bravo Xavier for doing Ireland
    proud too.
