Do you ever wonder why you can't have nice things on network television? Well, here's the answer. The list of the top 100 Most-Watched Shows On Broadcast TV reveals that if four things are certain in American life it's death, taxes, football and "NCIS."

Yep, the bland CBS procedural that we thought just our parents watched must be a guilty pleasure for many, because it was the most viewed program from Sept. 23rd to Dec. 15th when this data was compiled. In fact, in the top ten, two slots are taken by "NCIS" and its spinoff "NCIS: LA" and another two by "Sunday Night Football" and the post-game show. So where are the good network shows? Like "New Girl," "Parks & Recreation" and "Brooklyn Nine Nine"? Head toward the bottom of the list. More people watch reality shows and "60 Minutes" than those comedies, though comic fans should be happy to see "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." ranking in the top 30. And we are glad to see "The Good Wife" up high too.

Take a look at the rankings below and weep. [EW]

Hypothetical situation: You're a Mother. Your Mother lives with you. You also have a Daughter. That's three women, of three different ages, all living under the same roof. Your Husband (Daughter's Daddy) is overseas serving in the military. What show are you three going to watch when you sit down in front of the TV at the end of a long day? I know, I know! How about NCIS? It's non-offensive, non-violent, it's about the Navy, and it's a crime procedural. Sure, it's middle of the road, but middle of the road is where most viewers are. I'm stunned that a professional media critic could be so surprised by/dismissive of this information.

There is nothing "bland" or "guilty" about the pleasure people get from watching NCIS. The show admittedly took a while to get rolling, but from the third season on, it's been nothing but a genuine dramatic series, with more than enough comedy, suspense, mystery, and action for any viewer. Gibbs and his team have fantastic chemistry, and they deserve to be at the top of the list.

I would like to see the data they gathered. Where did they get it? How?

Glad to see ELEMENTARY's up there. That's a really good show. Great little mysteries and really strong dialogue and character writing.

I don't understand how IRONSIDE's so high. Didn't that get canned cause no one was watching it? And it's above THE SIMPSONS?
