'12 Years A Slave' Leads Golden Globe Nominations As 'American Hustle,' 'Nebraska' Also Perform Strongly

Another morning, another awards nominations announcement: this time, it's the turn of the oft-derided Golden Globes. Will "12 Years A Slave" carry on its success from the SAGs yesterday? Or will the Hollywood Foreign Press Association throw a spanner in the works? Most importantly, which nomination will be the most obvious 'please come to our ceremony, famous person' nod of 2013?

12 Years A Slave

Another morning, another awards nominations announcement: this time, it's the turn of the oft-derided Golden Globes. Will "12 Years a Slave" carry on its success from the SAGs yesterday? Or will the Hollywood Foreign Press Association throw a spanner in the works? Most importantly, which nomination will be the most obvious 'please come to our ceremony, famous person' nod of 2013?

In answer to our last question, probably Kate Winslet for "Labor Day." Otherwise, it has indeed been another good morning for "12 Years A Slave," but also for "American Hustle," with the films tied for the most number of nominations with seven, including Best Picture (the two won't be competing either, as they're in Drama and Comedy/Musical categories respectively). Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" performed best behind that, with five nominations, including Picture and Director. Meanwhile, "Gravity" took 4, along with a much needed boost for "Captain Phillips" which had the same number, while "Philomena," "Her," "Inside Llewyn Davis" and "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom" all won three nods.

"The Wolf Of Wall Street" and "Rush" made up the rest of the Picture nominees: the Scorsese film arguably under-performed, with only one other nod, for Leonardo DiCaprio, while Ron Howard's performed better than expected, also picking up a nod for Daniel Bruhl. "Mandela" was probably the real surprise here, with the HFPA no doubt influenced by the passing of the great leader last week, with Idris Elba making his way into the Best Actor field he's mostly been an outsider in. Meanwhile, there was disappointment for "Saving Mr. Banks," which took a single nomination, and "Lee Daniels' The Butler," which failed to get any. We're just happy to celebrate that Best Actress Comedy/Musical field, which included Greta Gerwig, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Julie Delpy.
