We initially didn't have very high expectations for "Texas Killing Fields," but when the film landed an in competition slot at the Venice Film Festival our interest was piqued. Perhaps there was more than meets the eye to what seemed a pretty rote crime thriller. Well, our initial instincts seem to be spot on.

My how time flies. It seemed it was only yesterday that we were watching a young, sweet and bespectacled Abigail Breslin take a road trip with her oddball family in "Little Miss Sunshine." And while she has done a handful of films since -- including most notably "Zombieland" -- we're still kind of shocked that she's now fifteen years old. And clearly, she's ready to try something a bit darker and more adult.

Don't act so surprised. We pretty much figured this might happen when Magnolia picked up the film at the beginning of the year and as is usual for the indie label, one of the biggest arthouse films of the year will be available in your living room first before you can see it on the big screen. That's right, Lars Von Trier's "Melancholia" will go digital on October 7th before getting a limited release on November 11th.

Update: Producers for the film tell 24 Frames that realistically, the earliest this will shoot is 2013 as a writer still needs to be hired, a script to be written and a film to cast -- a process which will take 18 months at least. And oh yeah, don't expect Harrison Ford. "In no way do I speak for Ridley Scott," producer Andrew Kosove said. "But if you're asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no. This is a total reinvention, and in my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting."

Stephen Root rules. Probably best known as Milton Waddams in "Office Space" the character actor moves effortlessly from comedy to drama to horror and is constantly working on a new project. Hell, just look at the wide variety of films he's had this year alone: "Red State," "Cedar Rapids," "Everything Must Go," voicing a part in "Rango," popping up in "Justified" and he's got "J. Edgar" around the corner. Not bad. He was also in Robert Redford's dusty musty drama "The Conspirator" earlier this year and he's impressed the Sundance veteran enough that he wants to work with him again.

He's got "The Avengers" next summer, and while he considers his non-superhero next options -- which include "Motor City" with Albert Hughes and the long-gestating Doug Liman moon movie "Luna" -- he's got an indie flick coming out that should remind folks that Evans is more than just a pretty face.
