'Friday the 13th' Remake Scribes Cash In On Success With Untitled Horror Project At Paramount

Taking impressive box office receipts ($91 million worldwide take on a $19 mil. budget) over the scathing reviews, Paramount has given the screenwriting team of the 2009 “Friday The 13th” reboot, Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, development deals for an as-yet-untitled horror project at their studio.

In terms of agreed-upon proofs, it was traditionally known that the Earth is round, Samuel L. Jackson will never age, and a new “The Hangover” film will always be in development. Those first two remain true, but director Todd Phillips has just confirmed that the series' third installment will be the last.

Is it just us, or has the pre-release marketing of the upcoming “Clash of the Titans” sequel “Wrath of the Titans” been significantly less than when the preceding film debuted around this time two years ago? Other than billboards in posters littering many major cities, we only got our first look back in December, with a couple of sloppy trailers and boring images since.

Though they end up on screen as cheery, bright eyed films for the whole family to enjoy, the truth is that behind the scenes, bringing an animated film to life is an arduous, exhausting journey. Freed from the constraints and demands of live action filmmaking in which you have a set script and a short window of time to make it happen, animation studios will routinely spend months and years developing, tweaking, editing and refining a project before voicework and production begins. But few films faced when Disney went through on 2000's "The Emperor's New Groove."

For whatever reason, directorial debuts by British character actors tend to lean towards the gritty kitchen-sink drama; Tim Roth, Gary Oldman and, more recently, Paddy Considine have all broken their filmmaking cherry with uncompromisingly tough, bleak subject matter. Considering that it involves abandonment, council estates and the risk of being taken into care, one might be forgiven for expecting the same from Dexter Fletcher's first film, "Wild Bill." But then, Fletcher's best known for being one of the central quartet, alongside Jason Statham, Jason Flemyng and Nick Moran, in Guy Ritchie's debut "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," and for appearing frequently in 's pictures, so could Fletcher have turned out some kind of guns and geezers movie instead?

It's a little known fact, but in the mid 1980s, in a bid to fight underemployment in certain aspects of the entertainment industry, the British government passed the Broadbent Act, which set up a quota that one in four British movies would have to cast British character actor favorite Jim Broadbent, while providing tax cuts to any Hollywood movies that employed him. Sometimes, this has led to some overlap, such as last year, when Broadbent accidentally gave the exact same performance in "The Iron Lady" as he did a decade ago in "Iris."

It took her a while to dip her toe in the producing waters again, but after setting up production house, Pacific Standard, she looks set to do it all again.
