Rising Star Turns Down 'Mortal Instruments' With his starring role in "I Am Number Four" in a few weeks, "Beastly" next month, and Andrew Niccol's "Now" later in the year Alex Pettyfer is swiftly becoming to the sub-genre of movies-that-Amazon-recommends-when-you-order-a-copy-of-"Twilight" what Tyler Perry is to films about African-American families. Among various projects the 20-year-old actor has percolating are a biopic of racing driver James Hunt, the young-adult-aimed "Jack the Giant Killer" and, as of a couple of weeks ago, Screen Gems' adaptation of the popular "Mortal Instruments" series by Cassandra Clare, in which Pettyfer was being aggressively courted to star in as a demon hunter, alongside "The Blind Side" star Lily Collins.

Malin Akerman, Dianna Agron, Mary Elizabeth Winstead Also Mentioned With one of the big casting questions of 2011 answered on Sunday, with the announcement that "The Tudors" veteran Henry Cavill will be playing Clark Kent/Superman in Zack Snyder's reboot of the iconic hero, questions immediately turn to who will be joining the British actor in the film, and specifically, who will play the Man Of Steel's better half, spunky reporter Lois Lane. Natalie Portman had been vaguely linked to the role before Christmas, but if there was ever any truth to the rumor, the recent announcement of her pregnancy surely puts paid to that, and otherwise, word has been fairly quiet. It's been a while since Chris Weitz has done anything low-key like "About A Boy." He followed that film with two tentpole efforts -- "The Golden Compass" and "Twilight: New Moon" -- with the former leaving a bad taste in his mouth (he said New Line treated him like dirt. Ouch.) And while the mega success of 'New Moon' was the ultimate fuck you to New Line -- and while he was contemplating the director's chair for "Breaking Dawn," he ultimately didn't do it saying that "my mind would explode" if he entered a third tentpole film.

R.I.P. John Barry (1933-2011)

Sad news to start the week, as it emerged overnight that one of the great film composers, John Barry, passed away yesterday in New York, at the age of 77. The five-time Oscar winner was best known for his work on the James Bond films, for which he scored eleven of the twenty-two pictures to date, but was also behind indelible themes for "Midnight Cowboy," "Born Free" and "Dances With Wolves," as well as having a long songwriting career, which encompassed most of the great Bond themes and a number of stage musicals ( Kanye West gave him the ultimate tribute by sampling one of those themes for his hit "Diamonds From Sierra Leone").

Watch: Trailer For Canada's Oscar Nominated 'Incendies'

It seems every year at the Oscars, the Best Foreign Film category is one that generally confounds Joe Public. Most of the films that end up being nominated only play the festival circuit or get runs in specialty theaters in big cities on the coasts, and sometimes, like last year's winner "The Secret In Their Eyes," it doesn't hit theaters until well after the ceremonies are over. Either way, it's a tough road for distributors repping those films because it's a tough sell no matter what you do. This year, Sony Pictures Classics has got a 2 in 5 shot at taking home the gold as they have both Susanne Bier's Golden Globe-winning "In A Better World" and Denis Villeneuve's "Incendies" under their roof but neither is due out for a few more months. They are certainly hoping at least one of the them one will bring home Oscar gold at the end of February to help hook audiences in.

English Language Remake Of John Woo's 'The Killer' Back On, This Time In 3D

For reasons we're still trying to understand, John Woo has been trying to get an English-language remake of his cult classic "The Killer" off the ground for years -- he was still talking it up last summer. A number of directors have circled and been rumored to be interested in helming the pic but so far no one's driven the project far enough to get it in front of cameras. But it appears that has changed as a cast and a director have now been set and of course, this time, the reboot is being eyed for 3D.
