In the era of Disney's multi-billion dollar "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, it's easy to forget that, for most of the 20th century, the idea of a film revolving around swashbucklers and sea dogs was pretty much box office poison. Sure, Errol Flynn might have brought them in in droves in the early years of the talkies in "Captain Blood," but since then, disaster followed disaster, with the likes of Roman Polanski's "Pirates" and Renny Harlin's "Cutthroat Island" entering the all-time hall of train wrecks.

The campaign for David Fincher's "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" has been moving steadily along. Last week, when some vintage footage of the accident that kicks of the story landed online, savvy viewers picked up some clues hidden within that led to a viral site What Is Hidden In Snow which has been slowly revealing geographic locations where fans can track down a framed flower like this -- just like the ones Henrik Vanger receives in the book/film -- with a signed card from Fincher. And tonight, another treat courtesy of MouthTapedShut.

Having delivered a solid international triple again with the Angelina Jolie spy actioner "Salt," and a hit TV series with ABC's "Revenge," Australian helmer Phillip Noyce is back on top, but the director of "Dead Calm" and "Clear and Present Danger" hasn't gone as far as to pick a follow-up yet. He was linked to submarine thriller "Hunter Killer" before Antoine Fuqua took over, flirted with the drama "Our Wild Life," is attached to a remake of "Bloodsport" for some reason, and also eyed up the thriller "Above Suspicion," as well as putting his name to romance "Timeless," which landed a lead a couple of weeks back in the shape of Liam "Brother of Thor" Hemsworth.

Too obvious? Aaron Sorkin, the Academy Award winning pen behind "The Social Network" and Emmy honored scribe of "The West Wing," and no stranger to portraits of larger than life figures in positions of power, is being sought to pen the gestating Steve Jobs biopic reports 24 Frames.

For a while now, Disney has employed a home video strategy that has paid off in spades. The studio's "vault" system makes titles available for a short window of time on home video, before they are pulled from stores and kept locked up for years until Disney decides to re-release it to great fanfare and even greater sales. This fall the studio tried a new tactic, a 3D converted theatrical re-release before the home video bow. The result? A nearly $100 million domestic haul for "The Lion King (in 3D)" before it's latest BluRay bow and a huge wake-up call to the rest of the industry who suddenly realized there is all kinds of money to be made from rehashing beloved tentpole and franchise films.

It seems as if rumors/speculation have been kicking around forever about "Sin City 2," but this summer the long-awaited sequel received some major injections of good news. First, "The Departed" writer William Monahan was signed on to get the script across the finish line with Robert Rodriguez promising that it will go in front of cameras as soon as they have a screenplay to work with. With next spring now being eyed as a potential start date, Frank Miller has spilled a few more small details about what we can expect in the next chapter.

While he's been busy producing for family (Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere"), co-writing with friends (Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom") and shooting second unit for both (Francis Ford Coppola's "Tetro" and Anderson's "The Darjeeling Limited"), it's high time Roman Coppola made a new film. His last effort, the deeply underrated "CQ" was ten years ago and so we're very glad he's casting up his latest effort, the indie pic, "Inside the Mind of Charlie Swan" (apparently no longer titled "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charlie Swan III," unless Variety's being super terse).

If things go according to plan, you'll be hearing the name Lily Collins more in the future. The actress was hand picked by Tarsem to lead his forthcoming (and still annoyingly untitled) Snow White movie and the plethora of stills for that film thus far have shown her to certainly look the part with ease. Collins was luckily left out of the critical carnage hauled at the Taylor Lautner vehicle "Abduction" last month and while she's still attached to another gestating tentpole in "The Mortal Instruments," the actress is wisely choosing a small scale indie for her next film.

Sort of like the comedy world version of Jessica Chastain, the "Saturday Night Live" funnyman seemed to be everywhere this year. In addition to starring in "Hall Pass," "Horrible Bosses" and "A Good Old Fashioned Orgy" he also hosted the MTV Movie Awards this summer and will feature in the final season of "Eastbound & Down." And determined to make sure you see his face on the big screen at least once every few months in 2012, the actor has signed up for yet another project.

Former metal giants, and now aging rock 'n roll dudes Metallica, have been on the wrong end of many decisions in the past while. If you're had the misfortune of hearing their forthcoming collaboration with Lou Reed, you'll know exactly what we mean. Or just look above at their ridiculous poses for the "Guitar Hero: Metallica," something these dudes wouldn't have even considered when their hair was longer and their tunes more badass. Or hell, even Lars Ulrich admitted recently he didn't get Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" and never followed up with the director when he asked to use their music for fight scenes in the movie. Although, that probably worked out for the best.
