'Kill List' Director Ben Wheatley Talks Sneaking In Script Rewrites, Influences & How Hard It Is To Make Naked People Scary

When we saw "Kill List" back at South by Southwest last year, well, we almost pooped ourselves in fear. Not really. But it was close. The movie, a clever-as-fuck mash-up of suburban domestic drama, hitman thriller, and occult horror film, really left an impression on us (one Playlist team member was visibly shaken – we had trouble finding him afterwards) – and we saw it at 9 o'clock in the morning! This weekend, "Kill List" is finally unleashed on unsuspecting theaters nationwide and we can't wait for everyone to get a look at this new genre classic. In anticipation of its release, we got to talk to writer/director Ben Wheatley, who discussed the film's development, sneaking an unauthorized script rewrite in, trying to sell a movie that you didn't want to spoil, and why naked people aren't that scary. Diablo Cody is depressed about the Oscar nominations. Not just because her screenplay for "Young Adult" was snubbed -- she already has one statuette at home for "Juno" -- but more so because she wasn't the only woman overlooked this year. Only three were nominated as screenwriters -- Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig for "Bridesmaids," and the late Bridget O'Connor as co-writer of "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" -- and none were nominated for Best Director. (Although a few films helmed by women scored nods in other categories: Agnieska Holland's "In Darkness" in Best Foreign Language Film, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson's "Kung Fu Panda 2" in Animated Film).

Quebecois filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has always been one of French-speaking Canada's most exciting filmmaking talents, thanks to the likes of "Maelström" and "Polytechnique," both of which won him Genie awards for Best Director, but last year saw him really start to make waves internationally with his Oscar-nominated drama "Incendies." That film saw him leap up Hollywood directorial wish-lists, with the filmmaker becoming attached to the long-gestating Black List script "Prisoners," while late last year saw reports that he'd be teaming up with Jessica Chastain for an adaptation of Russell Banks' novel "The Darling."

Even given the excitement around the reboot of "Casino Royale" a few years back, we can't remember the last time a James Bond film was quite as keenly anticipated as this year's 23rd installment in the franchise, "Skyfall." Not only does it mark the third time that Daniel Craig has played MI6's finest secret agent -- a somewhat belated return, after the movie was held up for over a year due to MGM's financial problems -- but thanks to the presence of Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes, and Oscar-nominated scribe John Logan ("Hugo"), the bar has been raised in terms of the pedigree of the series.
