'Pan Am' Might Land At Amazon Studios

When "Pan Am" first aired it looked like ABC might have a hit on their hands. The premiere (which cost $10m) was watched by 11 million viewers, the promos all looked (aesthetically at least) very appealing, while the reviews were cautiously positive and also expressed optimism for what the show had the potential to become. It also didn’t hurt that it arrived at the same time as NBC’s “The Playboy Club” – to which it bore a stylistic similarity – and seemed fantastic by comparison. But by the time the penultimate episode of the season aired the viewership had dropped to just over 2.5 million with a 0.7 demo rating, and by that point the writing was on the wall.

The success of "Star Wars" changed everything. While "2001" had been a giant hit a decade ago, most put it down to a fluke, but George Lucas' film suddenly proved that science fiction wasn't just for B-movies, but could be a licence to print money. Every studio in town were chasing the genre, but 20th Century Fox, who had distributed "Star Wars" had a head-start: they already had another space-set script in development, "Alien," by Dan O'Bannon, Ronald Shusett, Walter Hill and David Giler. They swiftly attached new helmer Ridley Scott to the project, and production got underway in the summer of 1978.

In February, the first trailer for Lorene Scafaria's "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" debuted, and it's a "world will end in three weeks" story mixed with a darkly comedic tone that quickly pushed the film into our 10 most anticipated indie films of the summer list. Even the soundtrack avoids a heavy dose of melancholy, preferring a bounty of uptempo nostalgia, featuring the hits of yesteryear from the likes of INXS and The Beach Boys. So, you can imagine how curious we might be, now that Focus Features has released two new preview clips from 'Seeking a Friend,' to see if it matches with our enthusiasm. Sadly, they don't.

Warner Bros. Lines Up Top Secret Sci-Fi Movie 'The Wind' From Screenwriter David Koepp & Director Nic Mathieu

Warner Bros. has a healthy amount of sci-fi projects brewing, with the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer's "Cloud Atlas" opening December 6th and Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" opening in 2013. Not much has been revealed about any of the films so far -- "Cloud Atlas" will somehow condense David Mitchell's multi-storyline, epic novel into three hours, "Pacific Rim" will see humans fight monsters and "Gravity" will see Sandra Bullock trapped in space (literally) -- but there's even less known about Warners' latest sci-fi endeavor.

Even though the rival project "Greetings From Tim Buckley" is in the can and if not finished, then pretty much nearly there, the filmmakers behind the Jeff Buckley biopic "Mystery White Boy" are choosing to make it right intead of fast. With the rights locked up to use Buckley's music, the blessing of his estate who are also involved with the film, and with rehearsals with already under way with lead Reeve Carney, this one is aiming to be the only Buckley movie you'll need to see, and they're adding a trio of strong talent.
