In what turned out to be a banner year for the movies, "The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford" ended up somewhat overshadowed. As fellow neo-Westerns "There Will Be Blood" and "No Country For Old Men" swept up plaudits and Oscars, the picture, the second by Australian director Andrew Dominik, received some raves, but plenty of negative notices too, and it ended up making a miniscule amount at the box office. But by decade's end, many had since rediscovered the picture as one of the finest of the 00s, and as such, Dominik's first film since, crime tale "Killing Them Softly," was one of the most eagerly anticipated pictures of the Cannes film festival this year.

While for many, the Cannes Film Festival means reading about it from afar, wishing all the buzzworthy films would arrive in theaters near you soon. But there's at least one entry this year that won't be exclusive to those on the Croisette. Edgy filmmaker Quentin Dupieux has ventured to the Directors' Fortnight sidebar with his short film "Wrong Cops," and just as it premiered in theaters there today, it landed online at the same time. How 2012.

If there has been one constant in "The Exorcist" franchise, it's that none of the sequels or prequels have ever come close to touching the terror or brilliance of William Friedkin's groundbreaking original. Nor have any of the countless exorcism movies since managed the feat either. But that isn't stopping another bite at the apple, as "The Exorcist" (recently named as the greatest horror movie ever by Time Out) is now getting prepped for the small screen in an expansive remake/prequel that will stretch out the terror over ten episodes.

So is this the summer's nuts 'n gum, "Jonah Hex"-style mess or a stylish take on the vampire genre? Or both? Frankly, it looks like it's a bit of everything in the red band trailer for "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," a movie that we keep forgetting is coming out next month just a couple of weeks after "Prometheus." And it seems 20th Century Fox has had their attention mostly on Ridley Scott's baby as well, but with that film screening for press next week before it opens internationally, it looks like they can now put their attention on the Timur Bekmambetov-directed, Tim Burton-produced movie.

Perhaps consider this a bit of a spoiler post, at least musically. So if you want to go in blind to John Hillcoat's prohibition drama "Lawless," we suggest you divert your eyes now. For the rest of you still with us, man, the soundtrack to "Lawless" is just one more reason to get excited for the film which lands on August 29th. By now you know it boasts an incredible cast including Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska, Gary Oldman, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke. You also know that the score was written by longtime Hillcoat collaborators Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, who wrote the haunting scores for "The Proposition," "The Road" and "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" (the multi-hyphenate Cave, an author, also wrote the "Lawless" screenplay).

“The Intouchables” is a study in contrasts. In one corner, there is Phillipe (Francois Cluzet), a wealthy, white renaissance man paralyzed from the waist down. He is mobile, exiting his home for fine dining, purchasing artwork, and attending the opera. He cannot continue to live the finer life without assistance, however, and as the film begins, he is in search for a new aide.

Boasting the box office spotlight before the “The Avengers” behemoth came along, “The Hunger Games” nonetheless found a worthy adaptation in director Gary Ross' hands, mixing a stellar performance by Jennifer Lawrence with an effectively gripping tone throughout. After an IMAX victory lap following its general release, Lionsgate is eager to keep the money train rolling, announcing that the two-disc Blu-ray/DVD and digital download versions of the film will be released this summer.

Australian filmmaker John Hillcoat has steadily built upon his career as an auteur known for brooding and unnerving pieces of work ever since his neo-western “The Proposition” started making the rounds in 2005. The picture offered viewers a refreshing take on the western genre, and a haunting tale of a crooked lawman who apprehends a notorious outlaw and gives him just nine days to take the life his older sibling or see his youngest brother executed.

Poor Tom Hardy. First the actor is forced to grow an unwieldy beard as prep for his starring role in the upcoming “Mad Max” reboot, only to have the start date pushed back countless times. Then, while in Cannes this week helping to promote John Hillcoat's “Lawless,” Hardy confessed he still had no clue when shooting began. However, it seems Hardy was either off trimming his beard when news struck, or co-star Charlize Theron is just more aware of these things, because the actress today revealed the film is set to shoot very soon, as in next week.

Mia Wasikowska has signed on to star in John Curran’s (“The Painted Veil”) new indie “Tracks.” The film will tell the true story of a young woman named Robyn Davidson who traveled 1678 miles through the Australian desert in 1987. It’s an Australian production and will be based on Davidson’s memoirs of the same name, and has already secured distribution down under and in the U.K. (through Momentum Pictures)
