What happens when the allure of a local legend, mixes with the reckless abandon of youth who don't fear waking up to their consequences of their actions? It's a compelling premise to base a movie on, and writer/director Jason Banker does just that with "Toad Road," a micro-budget horror film that has all the thrills and unease you'd expect from a major Hollywood movie.

Whatever David Bowie does, it's bound to be cooler than what everyone else is doing, and that's certainly true in 2013. The music legend dropped a new album, and along with it two celeb-filled, eye-popping videos that pretty much defied whatever else the industry was doing. So, would Bowie stoop to doing a weekly TV show?

There are few emerging American filmmakers right now as exciting as Jeff Nichols. The director is coming of a pretty fantastic run of three indie films -- the must-see-if-you-haven't "Shotgun Stories," the excellent "Take Shelter" and the deeply felt "Mud." And now major studios are paying attention. You might remember that Nichols' name was tossed around to direct "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes," but now he's got a projecgt lined up at Warner Bros. and he's staring to cast up.

We've seen countless horror movies come down the line in recent years "based on" or "inspired by" a true story. But we've never quite seen the actual real people behind the stories get involved in the marketing of the movie. Well, nothing stays the same, and with James Wan's "The Conjuring" coming in a few short weeks, Warner Bros. has got the actual family out to let audiences know: yes, this really did happen to them.

"The sky's the limit," Fred (Suzanne Clement) says when she's asked about what people will say when her boyfriend Laurence (Melvin Poupad) decides to become a woman. It's 1989 and she believes that her generation is ready to handle transsexuality -- and perhaps they are -- but as both Fred and Laurence soon find out, their intellectual capacity to deal with the transition may not survive the rigors of the heart. The young director Xavier Dolan has proven he's anything if not divisive, and his latest, "Laurence Anyways," will do nothing to change that. But as messy as it is, as much as the film overreaches and overplays its hand, "Laurence Anyways" is also exciting for the very ambition and narrative daring that it contains.
