Review: 'Gerhard Richter Painting' An Uneven Portrait Of Process & Fame

If one were to compare Corinna Belz's "Gerhard Richter Painting" to music documentaries, it would fall somewhere between Sam Jones' "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" and Grant Gee's "Meeting People Is Easy." Eschewing the standard biographical framework, the film instead offers up a slice-of-life look at the 79-year-old artist that largely forgoes any context (for better or worse) as it dips into the banality of various show openings (like the Radiohead doc) and the fascinating method he uses to create his work (like the Wilco film). But unlike those aforementioned movies, if you don't know anything about the life and career of Gerhard Richter, your appreciation of what's captured will vary.

The road to Pandora was never a short one. After announcing "Avatar" formally in the summer of 2005 (then known as "Project 880"), though publicly talking about its arrival as far back as the early aughts, James Cameron's ambitious 3D sci-fi fantasy picture finally landed in theaters at the end of 2009 (an 80 page treatment was written in 1994). It was the film's second "final" release date after initially being expected in May of 2009, and it was Cameron's first feature-length directorial effort in over a decade. But the prolonged gestation could not stop this juggernaut of a picture that is still the highest grossing film of all time domestically and globally ($2.78 billion and $600 million higher than the runner-up: Cameron's "Titanic").

Well, now that Terrence Malick's "To The Wonder" has been confirmed for Venice and Toronto, we can start obsessing over his next film, the currently lensing "Knight Of Cups." We've already seen an endless number of cast members so far revealed by set photos and/or Twitter -- Wes Bentley, Imogen Poots, Freida Pinto, Teresa Palmer -- with one more name now coming  coming aboard.

We're not known for our love of sporting events here at The Playlist, but ever since it was announced that Danny Boyle would be the man in charge of the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics (following in the footsteps of "Hero" director Zhang Yimou, who shepherded the Beijing events), we've been intrigued. After all, Boyle, as a recent Oscar winner for "Slumdog Millionaire," is a serious A-lister now, and could get any film he wanted made. And while he's kept his oar in, shooting thriller "Trance," with James McAvoy, last year (he'll finish post-production on it once the Olympics are done), it did mean giving over a year or so of his life to the event at a time when he's never had more cachet.

If there's one thing we unapologetically love about the ambitious and occasionally irksome "The Dark Knight Rises," it's Tom Hardy and his deliciously evil voice as Bane, the muscular zealot behind much of the movie's jumbo-sized mayhem. While some audience members still claim that his voice was indecipherable, this was a much bigger problem a few months ago, when the IMAX-shot aerial prologue was shown attached to select prints of Brad Bird's "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol." Now someone has done a compare-and-contrast, while details of a brief deleted scene have also emerged.

Given that it was masterminded by filmmaker Danny Boyle, one shouldn't have been surprised by the presence of a number of movie clips and icons throughout last night's opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. Clips from "A Matter Of Life And Death" and Boyle's own "Trainspotting," appearances from Mary Poppins and Voldemort were all in the mix (we'll have a full review of the event up soon). But what would a British opening ceremony be without an appearance from the country's most iconic character: James Bond himself.

Fans of Scandanavian drama (or at least American remakes thereof) take heart. While AMC axed "The Killing" this afternoon, A&E is moving ahead with another murderously titled show in "Those Who Kill," and have brought on Joe Carnahan to help get it off the ground.

It seems folks are still divided on Joe Wright's undeniably audacious take on Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina." After a trailer and a generous six minute clip, some haven't cottoned to Wright's approach, while this writer, at least, has fallen for what has been on display so far, something that at least looks like a fresh approach to literary drama tropes. And with the film just over a month away from its U.K. release and festival bow on this side of the ocean, another peek at the movie has arrived.

Granted, we don't keep up with Rosie Perez, but that doesn't mean she hasn't been keeping busy. While the last time this writer saw her was in "Pineapple Express," just over a year ago, a fellow Playlist-er caught her awesomely praising (and then leaving) a screening of "The Fighter." You go Rosie Perez....anyway, she's landed a gig in what will be her first real substantial drama in quite some time (sorry, the feel goodery of the upcoming "Won't Back Down" doesn't count).
