Losing one of the series' most well-drawn characters alongside one of the least, season three of “Boardwalk Empire” has wasted no time in teasing the repercussions caused by the former's occurrence (sorry, Paz de la Huerta fans), and now a just-released teaser is here to continues that building tension.

With Sony confirming last week that "The Girl Who Played With Fire" would not be hitting screens in 2013 (hardly a shock considering no casting or greenlight or any other movement had happened on "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" followup), speculation brewed as to whether or not David Fincher would return. While "The Social Network" was pretty much smooth sailing, his relationship with Sony grew fractious during 'Dragon Tattoo,' with heads butting from the start over casting and more bumps along the way. "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" was expected to be his next film, but we'd wager Disney might be re-considering the expensive 3D and CGI-heavy movie in the wake of the belly flop "John Carter," and particularly with "The Lone Ranger" reportedly already going over budget. Whatever might be going on behind the scenes, it seems Fincher still has Lisbeth Salander on the brain.

While Lars Von Trier is no stranger to attracting Hollywood types to his movies, particularly with his films "Dogville" and "Manderlay," you might think his upcoming, sex-driven "The Nymphomaniac" might be the kind of project agents keep away from their talent. Guess again. Shia LaBeouf signed on earlier this month to the film being led by Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgard, with Nicole Kidman and Willem Dafoe both rumored, and while the latter pair are yet to be confirmed, Von Trier's next endeavor has just added a batch of talent, including two more prominent names.

It would appear that the domain of rival movies isn't just limited to fairy tale blockbusters like "Mirror Mirror" and "Snow White White And The Huntsman." One of the most compelling moments in recent American history -- the killing of Osama Bin Laden -- is already taking a couple of different routes to the big screen. There is of course Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" which hits in December and has already drawn some minor controversy with political types accusing the Obama government of sharing classfied intel with the production. There's also the comparably low rent "Code Name Geronimo" starring Cam Gigandet, Xzibit and Eddie Kaye Thomas that The Weinstein Company picked up back at Cannes. And now it seems Steven Spielberg is kicking the tires on his own Bin Laden flick.

There was a brief moment where August still seemed viable for blockbuster pictures. Generally, the month has been viewed as the weak sister of the hot season, usually a dumping ground for once-promising projects that fell by the wayside, gathering little attention from students preparing to return to school. A string of August hits over the last decade changed that, but here we are, back to the dog days. Last summer was plagued by low attendance for films like "30 Minutes or Less," "Conan the Barbarian" and "Fright Night," and if this weekend is anything to go by, with "The Expendables 2" handily defeating an onslaught of unattractive new product, we're in for even lower grosses. In fact, it's the first weekend in a decade where no new film opened to over $7 million. Ouch.

The big directorial vacancy right now in Hollywood is the one for "Justice League," the superhero team-up movie that Warner Bros. hope will help them catch up to the success of Marvel's "The Avengers." The studio unsuccessfully tried to get the supergroup going a few years back with George Miller at the helm, but with Christopher Nolan's Bat series wrapped up and "Man of Steel" on the way, it's now a major priority for the studio, with a script commissioned from "Gangster Squad" scribe Will Beall and an active hunt for a director underway in the hope that the film would provide a launching pad for other DC heroes like Wonder Woman, The Flash and a revamped Green Lantern.

A handful of new pics from upcoming films has landed in the pages of Entertainment Weekly over the past few weeks. We've rounded up some of them here for your viewing pleasure. First up is "This Is 40," Judd Apatow's quasi-sequel to "Knocked Up," starring Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann alongside Apatow and Mann's real-life kids. Apatow has been veering more towards drama lately, and this looks like another step in that direction, with the pic centering on Mann's Debbie as she turns 40 and finds renewed energy to raise her kids right, fix the problems in her relationship and remain fit and attractive. The trailer was very promising, and the December 21st release is surely a sign of studio confidence.

The specter of "Downton Abbey" has been present in the run up to the broadcast of BBC and HBO's new period drama "Parade's End," which aired its first episode in the UK last night (it'll come to the US cable network in the near future, though no exact date has been confirmed yet). Both are lavish period tales in the run up to, midst and aftermath of the first world war, and the star of the latter, Benedict Cumberbatch, didn't help matters much when he labelled the second season of 'Downton' "fucking atrocious" in a recent interview.

Earlier this month, the trades fell over each to write up something about "Justice League." It was first reported by Variety that Warner Bros. wanted Ben Affleck to helm the movie and were planning to meet with him, and literally hours later, Deadline parried with their own story that the actor/director had already turned the job down and that their rivals were playing a bit fast and loose with facts. Well, a couple weeks later, it has all come out in the wash and it looks like the latter was right.
