With Billy Crystal wheezing through a pretty uninspired encore gig last year at the Oscars (replacing Eddie Murphy who departed after Brett Ratner stepped down from producing the show after his "Tower Heist" press tour meltdown), and a pretty lethargic James Franco and hyper Anne Hathaway flopping twelve months before, it's no surprise that the Academy is looking for fresh blood. And it appears they're hoping their answer can be found in channeling some of the talent originating from "Saturday Night Live."

You gotta admire Ron Howard and producing partner Brian Grazer for keeping the fight alive for their hugely ambitious adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower." Even though Universal balked on the project last summer, the pair kept developing and shopping the project, with Grazer revealing they had reduced the budget and that HBO was lining up to take on the TV portion of the sprawling franchise. Then, this spring, it was revealed that Warner Bros. were kicking the tires on the whole thing, which made sense given that the parent company owns HBO as well. And it appears as if everything is continuing to move forward. But with a pretty big change.

While primarily known for her genre roles in films ranging from "Final Destination 3" to "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" to "The Thing," Mary Elizabeth Winstead got a chance to prove to audiences she's got acting skills to go along with her ass-kicking skills and good looks, impressing audiences earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival in the alcoholism drama "Smashed." And it seems that entire experience was a good one for Winstead, as she's lending her talents to that film's writer/director James Ponsoldt's next effort, "The Spectacular Now," which is already moving ahead.

As if the promise of a spooky stop-motion film that looks to be equal parts “The Sixth Sense” and “Coraline” (from the creators of the latter film no less) wasn’t enough – the marketing machine has gone into overdrive for Laika animation's upcoming “ParaNorman.” In this case that doesn’t mean just hitting us with a barrage of pictures clipped from trailers and variations of one poster, as the film’s marketing department has instead created faux newspapers for the fictional town of Blithe Hollow, sent zombie slippers to members of the press and even taken over the international stage known as the Olympic Games.

We love Chris Pratt, but you already knew that. The "Parks and Recreation" star has been steamrolling into movies with a nice turn in last year's "Moneyball," a supporting part in this spring's "Five-Year Engagement," a role in Kathryn Bigelow's upcoming "Zero Dark Thirty," and has bagged the lead in Warner Bros.' "Lego." And now he's gearing up to exercise his ample comedic muscles in "Starbuck," a remake of the French Canadian hit that's set to star Vince Vaughn. The story centers on a middle-aged man whose life changes when he finds out that he has fathered 533 children through sperm donation, and that a few hundred of those children have expressed the wish to meet their biological father. Pratt will play Vaughn's lawyer. The film is being written and directed by the original helmer Ken Scott, and will roll in front of cameras later this year.

There’s been some talk of the William Forsythe-starring “Raging Bull II” as of late, only we’d be lying if we said it was due to any sort of anticipation for the film’s release. In fact the conversation has mostly circled around the lawsuit between MGM and famed boxer Jake LaMotta -- the subject of the 1980 Martin Scorsese-directed classic “Raging Bull” starring Robert De Niro – due to the fact that LaMotta and producers of the unofficial sequel were looking to crib off of some of the cultural cachet of Scorsese’s original film by making it appear to be a direct sequel.
