Happy almost 2012 to you! It seems studios don't expect many moviegoers at the theaters this weekend, knowing that we'll all be out partying it up with friends, rather than hitting up the multiplex with family like last week. Only a few new releases this week, so you'll be able to catch up on "We Bought a Zoo," "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and other big Christmas releases that may have missed your favor last week. That's if you're heading out to the theater at all this weekend. There are a couple of high-profile pics worth checking out if you're looking for something fresh: Sundance hit "Pariah" opened on Wednesday and Meryl Streep in "The Iron Lady" is in select theaters today.

There was no pattern of box office success for 2011. One could point to the audience rejecting obvious pandering nerd bait like "Cowboys And Aliens," but then how does that explain "Transformers"? People can celebrate R-rated comedies, but what does that mean for "The Change-Up"? Few leading men and women appeared often in 2011, as it was a year dependent on concepts (mostly pre-established) as opposed to marquee names. And a lot of those new names are wise, lining up smaller projects in the coming year to diversify their portfolio rather than boost their paychecks.

The annual top ten list is pretty much an exercise in futility to some degree. With a race to cram in as many movies as possible as the clock on the year winds down (and let it be said, I didn't get to see everything I would have wanted to) combined with the added duty of then ranking them, it's safe to say that in three months (not to mention three years) feelings and impressions on the movies I've seen will have changed. But in considering the list for this year, I went with the former adjective -- "feeling." Because at the end of the day, the movies that will linger with me the most, that I will want to share and encourage others to see are those that struck a deep chord that still resonated days, weeks and months later. Others are just movies that thrilled and entertained with an inventiveness and creativity unlike anything else I saw on the big screen.

With Ridley Scott revisiting his earlier work with his "Alien" spinoff/prequel/whatever "Prometheus," and with another "Blade Runner" movie on the horizon, while purists may shudder, he'll be introducing the movies that made him famous to a whole new generation. And there is something exciting (and kind of envious) about younger movie lovers experiencing the terror of outer space and the dystopia of a rain-soaked 2019 Los Angeles for the first time. But for those us who have been around the block already, there is something to take a look at if you think you've seen it all.

Box Office

Being a Hollywood executive is like being a gambler. Coming home with $2000 in your pocket is pretty impressive, and some execs would happily brag about such a thing. But few like to openly discuss the fact they left the house with $4000.

While audiences seemed cool on the idea of Matt Damon hanging out with a bunch of animals in "We Bought A Zoo" (Vulture has a few pretty good theories on why that happened) they've been missing out a movie that has more heart than you might expect, and keeps the twee factor surprisingly dialed down. And being a Cameron Crowe film, he can't help but curate yet another mostly solid selection of songs, though it's not without a couple of headscratching choices.

2012 is just a few days away, and there are a slew of new posters for films that will be released in the new year (assuming none of them switch over to The Weinstein Company, at which point, their release dates will be changed seven times before the film is inevitably dumped on Blu-ray. What up, “Shanghai”!).
