I think it was only as I sat down to write this list that I realized what a terrific year for film 2012 was. Not so much in the narrowing down of the list -- I'd over-extended my Top 10 to 15 last year, and it was relatively simple to pare it down, although there's still a few heartbreakers that didn't make the cut. It was more the way that, as i wrote each capsule up, the films themselves seem to make the case that, actually, it was the very best film you saw in the last twelve months. So what is it doing all the way down at number 12?

It’s no secret that many films have been lost to the ravages of time -- an estimated 90 percent of American films made before 1929 are believed to gone forever -- but it’s hard to believe that an influential short film released in 1980 in front of showings of “Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back” could be missing. But that’s exactly what happened though...until now. Wired is reporting that the original negative of “Star Wars” art director Roger Christian’s directorial debut, the 25-minute short film “Black Angel,” has been located.

It’s going to take a lot to knock “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” off its pedestal, even if studios tried their best this weekend, firing off both barrels against a global blockbuster. Families and teens supported 'An Unexpected Journey' over the holiday period, defeating two high-profile newcomers to be the top attraction for the third straight week. 'The Hobbit' is now eyeballing $300 million domestic, but as always international dollars are a big factor, and by time January 1st rings in the New Year, it will cross $700 million worldwide.

During the Marrakech Film Festival earlier this month we had a brief chat with director Jonathan Demme ("Stop Making Sense," "The Silence of the Lambs," "Rachel Getting Married," "Neil Young Journeys," etc), who was in town to give one of the festival’s Masterclasses (Darren Aronofsky was among the other filmmakers to give one, you can read our coverage of his masterclass here). The first thing that struck us about Demme, however, was just how enthusiastic of a cinepile the veteran director is -- it’s unusual to come across a person being so honored who is actually spending most of his time at the festival watching the films.

It's coming on nearly four years since the original Swedish language version of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" rode the wave of the popularity of the books, becoming a hit in its own right and making a star out of Noomi Rapace in the process. But since then, director Niels Arden Oplev has been keeping a low profile. Dabbling in television work for the most part while developing a couple of feature gigs, the helmer will make his Hollywood debut in 2013 with "Dead Man Down." And he's hoping that Rapace is the good luck charm that will work some magic a second time around.
