Akira Kurosawa
While Akira Kurosawa is perhaps best known for his more popular samurai films (check out our retrospective of those films here and here), his catalog of over 30 feature films range from noir to dramas and with so much more in between. As a neophyte to his work, it can be hard to figure out where to jump in first with his filmography (though "Seven Samurai" and "Rashomon" are common starting points), but perhaps this career-spanning documentary might help newcomers find another entry point, or for die hard fans, a greater appreciation of his work.

Tim's Vermeer
Try as we might to cover every corner of the film world in a given year, some movies, even as acclaimed as "Tim's Vermeer," for whatever reason manage to escape our grasp but you can bet this is one we'll be catching up with in 2014.

A Promise
Running into the fall festival with appearances at Venice and TIFF, the latest from French filmmaker Patrice Leconte ("Man On The Train," "My Best Friend"), the English language "A Promise," failed to make much of a splash. So even as the film still needs to find a U.S. distribution, it's gearing up for release overseas and the first trailer has landed for the movie.

X-Men'/'Fantastic Four' Crossover
2013 is nearly done, but not without a couple more comic book movie rumors kicking around under the good ol' gossip tree. And it seems one of them has already been debunked...

The Wolf Of Wall Street
Ferociously vulgar, outrageously funny, a film about excess that nearly ran four hours long that still features over 50 songs in the movie, there is nothing nuanced or subtle about Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf Of Wall Street." It's a go-for-broke, NC-17 skirting tale of debauchery that has left few feeling ambivalent about the picture. But if you've yet to sneak out of the family obligations and make it to the cinema to see this one for yourself, here are a few teases to get you moving. And if you have seen the flick, here's even more to dive into.

The Monuments Men
While the woulda/shoulda/coulda conversation about the awards potential for "The Monuments Men" will likely pop up again once reviews for the film start coming in, the bottom line is that it simply wasn't ready. Originally slated to arrive this month, George Clooney's WWII caper was pushed a couple of months so editing, effects and even the score could be finished in time without compromising quality. So with that caveat out of the way, and the production on schedule for a February release, a lot more is being shown off from the movie.

Nymphomaniac
Fifty shades of what? While Hollywood will spend the next year attempting to convince everyone just how hot their adaptation of the mommy porn book will be, Lars von Trier has gone ahead and pushed, ripped, burned and completely destroyed the kinky envelope with his two-part "Nymphomaniac." And with the movie rolling out abroad, the teasing continues as we get ready to experience the epic stateside.
