A Lawyer Gets His Wings: Paramount Vows To Prevent 'It's A Wonderful Life' Sequel From Happening

If you were not particularly thrilled by the idea of a potential sequel to “It’s a Wonderful Life,” then you should not have to worry much longer. As it turns out, Paramount Pictures actually has some standards. A spokeswoman from the studio released a statement yesterday, remarking that a sequel to “It’s a Wonderful Life” would not take place without a fight. The possible sequel, entitled “It’s a Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story,” was officially announced earlier this week with Bob Farnsworth, of Hummingbird Productions co-producing alongside Allen J. Schwalb, who was also expected to finance the film. Farnsworth penned the script with Martha Bolton.

Paramount stated yesterday, “No project relating to ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ can proceed without a license from Paramount. To date, these individuals have not obtained any of the necessary rights, and we would take all appropriate steps to protect those rights.”

This announcement must come as bad news to the producers, and especially to actress Karolyn Grimes who was set to star in the film, reprising her role from the original as George Bailey’s daughter, Zuzu. Grimes had not appeared in a film since 1952 and she claimed in the original Variety report, “The script by Bob Farnsworth and Martha Bolton was wonderful, and I wanted to be involved with his version of the film immediately.” And while we may be slightly curious as to how the script could drive someone out of a 60+ year retirement, it’s probably best to leave George Bailey’s family alone and allow the original film to continue living on as a holiday staple for the next hundred years, if possible.
