A Planetload Of New Images, Banners & Posters From 'Man Of Steel' Arrive

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's an absolute truckload of new images and posters from "Man Of Steel," Zack Snyder's increasingly imminent reboot of the Superman series. Many groaned when Snyder got the gig three years back, even with Christopher Nolan acting as producer, but the closer the film's gotten, the more it looks like the naysayers, ourselves included, might have to eat their words.

And there's plenty more confidence to be found in this batch of photos, banners and posters from Warner Bros., which indicate almost every facet of the new movie, from Russell Crowe' Kryptonian father Jor-El, to Laurence Fishburne's Daily Planet boss Perry White, and more besides. But will moviegoing audiences take to Henry Cavill's Superman the way they have to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, Christian Bale's Batman and Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man? We'll find out when the movie opens on June 14th. [Superhero Hype]

    So there's the Krypton origin story, there's the Earth teenager story, there's Clark's self discovery story, there's the arrival of Superman, the acceptance of Superman and then there's the General Zod story. An awful lot to fit into two or so hours without comprimising any of the components. Yet, I'm still hopeful it's going to do what Batman Begins did for the Dark Knight.

    All these clips and pictures, I've still only heard Henry 'man of wood' Cavill utter about 4 lines. It looks way prettier than a Snyder movie should though.

    Will open like gangbusters because of that great trailer and score.

    But I have a feeling the picture itself doesn't work. There are some "tells". The trailer studiously avoids referencing anything other than the set up for the character. The superhero action story, which is at the core of all of these projects, and in this risk averse industry is what the marketing department is obligated to emphasize to protect their jobs, is barely there. No one spends $175 million dollars and endures years of litigation over rights to then sell "Man of Steel" as a father/son character study - unless they had no other choice.

    And the trailer goes to great pains to make sure that almost no one delivers a line on screen - almost all of the dialog is repositioned as trailer voice over, which is often an indication of performance issues.

    My gut instinct is that, if one looks past the high evoked by that great music in the trailer, it feels like the marketing department is very skillfully cloaking some problems.
