While the fan boy and critical community still seems divided on the merits of Matthew Vaughn’s 2010 adaptation of Mark Millar’s “Kick-Ass,” Vaughn has moved onto a more lucrative superhero franchise with the “X-Men: First Class” series as the “Kick-Ass” brand continues to roll along with a sequel in the works.

While Universal's decision to move Oliver Stone's "Savages" from a fall release date to a prime summer slot on the same weekend that "The Amazing Spider-Man" hits theaters may seem like a strange choice, there's a certain logic to it from a counter-programming perspective. And moreover, it seems to be in the oddball spirit of the director himself, who usually doesn't miss an opportunity to provoke and challenge when given half the chance. And while we'll have to wait and see if the gamble will pay off, with just a couple weeks to go the studio has dropped a generous helping of new images of the film, giving us a chance to see what Stone is pulling together for his latest, pulpier effort.

An Oliver Stone crime-actioner starring Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, Blake Lively, Emile Hirsch, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Demian Bichir, Benicio Del Toro and Salma Hayek -- you'd think there would be a bit more excitement for "Savages" with the film set to hit theaters in just over a month. But on the marketing end, things have been fairly underwhelming.

By this point, we've seen at least something from pretty much every major movie 2012 has to offer. "The Hobbit"? Yep. "Django Unchained"? That hit yesterday. Hell, even "The Master" snuck out a clip and Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" launched a splashy trailer. But with a fall release date set for Joe Wright's "Anna Karenina," we haven't seen one peep except for a handful of images, and while we await some kind of footage, a few more pics have landed online.

This writer, and many Playlist members, will fully admit -- we're still reeling from the fact that something Scottish comic book writer Mark Millar said actually came true. The king of exaggeration, undermanaging expectations, fibs and tall tales, generally everything that comes out of the "Kick-Ass" creator's mouth must be taken with a ocean-sized block of salt, so we were shocked to hear that "Kick Ass 2," was not only actually moving forward, the sequel was actually shooting at the end of this summer (though now it appears to be an early fall shoot). Good for him, though the scoreboard is still akin to 20-1 at this point when it comes to fiction vs. facts.

It's two down and one to go for Taylor Kitsch whose attempt to leap from "Friday Night Lights" to blockbuster superstardom has been wobbly at best. Both "John Carter" and "Battleship" are underperforming, didn't exactly show off his acting skills in the best light (though ladies got more than an eyeful of his ripped bod) and now it's down to this: "Savages," the latest from the wild and unpredictable Oliver Stone.

Well, a stopped clock is right twice a day. After two years of pretty much bullshit from "Kick-Ass" creator Mark Millar, it looks like his talk that "Kick-Ass 2" would shoot this summer is actually becoming a reality.

Look out, Spider-Man, because Oliver Stone is on your tail with one helluva cast. Opening just a few days after the webbed one goes 3D, "Savages" is hoping to cater to adults looking for a break from spidey slinging and this first full trailer certainly promises quite the diversion.

Yawn. Another stuffy costume drama and adaptation of "Anna Karenina," a story we've seen played out more than once on the big screen and small. Who cares, right? Wrong. While the latest from Joe Wright, which sees him reteam with his "Atonement" and "Pride & Prejudice" star Keira Knightley, might seem like an easy lay-up, in the director's typical fashion, he's raising the bar. As was recently revealed in an extended profile in Empire magazine, Wright choose to make the production nearly entirely on a single stage, in a take that has been described as experimental, taking place in an "elastic universe" that will include toy trains and dollhouses standing in for exterior locations.
