Godzilla
Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla” (our review) did so well this weekend (almost $200 million worldwide) that by Sunday they had already announced a sequel was in the works. And of course, with a massive opening like that, it’s to be expected. The monster movie is a triumph, at the very least, for director Gareth Edwards. His directorial career started with “Monsters," a super lo-fi, low-budget monster movie about an unlikely pair of strangers trying to travel from Central America to the United States, in a world (and particularly the border of Mexico), now infested with gigantic creatures, that resembles a police state.

Godzilla
Popular culture has obviously changed dramatically since 1954 when Toho Studios released Ishirō Honda’s inaugural kaiju movie, “Godzilla.” Originally a horror/science-fiction movie, “Godzilla” and the subsequent Toho Studio movies (all 28 of them), were never really big on character. Various scientists were always tasked with stopping the gigantic monster—or assisting him when he veered toward hero, facing off against rival “evil” monsters—but the draw was always the visual spectacle of Godzilla destroying and battling his way through each movie.

Godzilla
"The great thing with a project like 'Godzilla' is that when you’re doing a movie like this that involves a monster that’s so beloved, you suddenly get access to the greatest visual artists out there working today. So I was very lucky in terms of that," director Gareth Edwards told Bloody Disgusting last summer. "...in terms of designing 'Godzilla,' we spent about an entire year just working on that aspect alone. You never quite feel like you have enough time but I wouldn’t change a single thing with the design. I’m so incredibly happy with it."

Godzilla
If we were to hazard a guess based on the myriad viral images Legendary Pictures has released of their "Godzilla" reboot/redo/do-over, we'd say sinkholes—and ones some world governments believe should be secret—factor in quite heavily in the plot. Or at least the mechanics of what gets the story engine moving. Following the leak of Comic-Con footage in October that made some impressive waves, the official trailer for "Godzilla" is here. Run for cover.

Well, that was fast. Despite Marvel Chief Kevin Feige cautioning that "The Avengers 2" was some ways away, Joss Whedon had just started screenplay, and therefore the new characters of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch could potentially not land in the final version of the script, casting is underway. And a frontrunner for the role of the speedster Quicksilver has already been found. The Wrap reports that "Kick-Ass" and "Savages" star Aaron Taylor-Johnson is the main actor Marvel is eyeing for the role. No decision has been made yet and no other actors in the running have been revealed.

The pressure of insurmountable expectations from established predecessors hangs over “Kick-Ass 2,” seen in the characters of Mindy Macready (Chloe Grace Moretz) and Chris D’Amico (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). Teenage Mindy trains to push herself as costumed crimefighter Hit-Girl, visibly seeking approval from the vacated costume of her late father, known to the general populace as Big Daddy. She’s promised to avoid letting down her doting dad, but she also vowed to honor Marcus (Morris Chestnut), her new legal guardian handpicked by her father who wishes the girl would try to lead a normal, non-costumed life. Young millionaire D’Amico, meanwhile, remains haunted by the sight of his father blown to bits by a bazooka fired by young vigilante Kick-Ass at the end of the first picture, believing he can honor dad’s memory by building his own criminal empire.
