Tribeca Review: Abbie Cornish Shines, But The Questionable 'The Girl' Remains Ethically Dubious

Well-told, well-shot and featuring a strong, but restrained and internalized performance from actress Abbie Cornish, director David Riker's "The Girl" is a mannered and in-the-pocket indie drama that might be a total subdued winner if it weren't for its dubious political ideologies, an irony considering the film's DNA is clearly built on humanist tendencies. While the Australian Cornish does have mild issues with sticking the landing on her Texas accent, it's her meatiest role since the deeply underrated "Bright Star" and lesser-seen, but no less valuable indies like "Somersault" and "Candy" (the latter featuring her going toe-to-toe with Heath Ledger and giving as good as she got) and she makes the most of it.

After a break out turn in Jane Campion's "Bright Star," Abbie Cornish has landed a number of profile projects with "Limitless," "Sucker Punch" and "W.E." all coming out last year to varying degrees of success. The actress also teamed with Martin McDonagh for his latest star-studded effort "Seven Psychopaths" but has returned to her indie roots with David Riker's drama "The Girl."

After gaining the attention of the indie world with her brave turn in the Aussie indie flick "Somersault," Abbie Cornish snagged the eyeballs of everyone else thanks to Jane Campion's ravishing "Bright Star." Since then, the actress has never been busier, and this year alone she appeared in three films: the spring hit "Limitless," Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch" and Madonna's "W.E." And it doesn't stop there, as 2012 is already gearing up to be another packed year for Cornish. In addition to having the indie flick "The Girl" in the can, now a highly anticipated project has been added to her slate.

Carey Mulligan, Felicity Jones, Abbie Cornish & Imogen Poots In Contention For Female LeadHis Lord Voldemort might *spoiler* have finally met his end this weekend in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two," but Ralph Fiennes isn't hanging about: he's playing an unknown role in Sam Mendes' "Bond 23," and he's in rehearsal to play Prospero in "The Tempest" on stage in London. But the thespian isn't just sticking to acting: his directorial debut, "Coriolanus," picked up strong reviews at the Berlin Film Festival at the start of the year, and will hit theaters in the fall, and the actor's now planning another venture behind the camera that will shoot next year.

For Abbie Cornish, stardom seems to be just out of reach but is something that is undeniably on the horizon. She broke out in the Aussie drama "Somersault" opposite Sam Worthington, garnered well deserved acclaim for her turn in Jane Campion's "Bright Star" and used that good word to land roles in the sleeper hit "Limitless," the disaster "Sucker Punch" and perhaps most intriguingly, Madonna's potential awards season bait "W.E." Well, she hasn't forgotten her indie roots and as you might remember, last fall she replaced Emily Blunt in "The Girl" and now we have our first look at her in the film.

Jena Malone Surprised WB Greenlit The Risky Film, Oscar Isaac Gives Details On Working With 'Mad Genius" Nichols Winding RefnZach Snyder's long gestating, high-concept, ladies-led fantasy project "Sucker Punch" -- one not based on any kind of pre-existing franchise or comic book, but very genre-blending -- has been reported on, speculated about and anticipated for ages, so now that it's finally arriving in theaters this weekend, we'll be curious to see if that interest translates at the box office. Will it turn into "Kick Ass," a beloved genre film that was ignored by mainstream audiences? Or will it turn out like "Watchmen," perhaps not the most successful comic-book adaptation of all time given its budget and the legalities surrounding it (a $107 million dollar domestic gross plus $185 million worldwide off a $130 million dollar budget, minus marketing and a very expensive lawsuit to boot which saw WB handing profit from the film over to Fox) but still, with DVD revenue, nothing to be ashamed of either.

Originally (and enigmatically) titled “Dark Fields,” Neil Burger’s latest film now bears the bland moniker “Limitless,” making it sound like a film scraped together from D.C. Comics’ dregs. But rather than being another entry in the seemingly neverending superhero genre, “Limitless” is a sci-fi-inflected thriller that never quite lives up to its premise or its lead actor.

Film Eyeing Premiere At The Venice Film Festival This FallDuring its production, rumor had it that Madonna's daughter, Lourdes, had been cast in her mother's picture in an unknown role. While it was reportedly debunked at the time, the casting turned out to be true with star Abbie Cornish revealing the famous offspring will play a younger version of her own character, Wally Simpson.

Aussie Actress Says 'W.E.' Filmmaker Madonna Is A "Natural" DirectorOK, actress Abbie Cornish went on far too long this weekend during the "Limitless" junket about being a vegetarian (booooring), but the Australian beauty is still tops in our book. Coming off an amazing (and sadly unrecognized turn) in Jane Campion's "Bright Star," Cornish's career has taken some interesting twists and turns. While it feels as if she's gone mainstream or at least is taking off, nabbing roles in Zack Snyder's tentpole ,"Sucker Punch," the high-concept "Limitless," and seemingly finding herself in the mix for several hot projects ("The Great Gatsby," "Prometheus" and many more), Cornish's journey seems to simply be an exploratory one; trying on whatever comes her way that sounds like a new challenge, indie, tentpole or otherwise.
