Says Adaptation Of 'Red Azalea' Is Dead, But He May Yet Make A China-Set FilmConsidering how long he's been away -- thirteen years since his most recent film, "The Last Days of Disco" -- there was understandably some concern about the return of Whit Stillman with "Damsels in Distress." Had the dryly funny, literate indie legend behind "Barcelona" and "Metropolitan" gotten rusty in his time away? Would the casting of teen idol Adam Brody, and mumblecore queen Greta Gerwig in a college-set comedy see him water down his work to appeal to the kids?

The indie ensemble comedy genre is fraught with pitfalls, from high concepts that just don't deliver, to outrageous storylines that can't sustain their own frenzied energy. For every "Little Miss Sunshine" there are countless more that attempt to create that film's almost intangible alchemy but falter somewhere along the way. "The Oranges" could have gone either way - with Julian Farino a mostly TV director ("Entourage," "How To Make It In America") making his sophomore film with a grab bag cast including Hugh Laurie, Catherine Keener, Oliver Platt, Allison Janney, Alia Shawkat, Adam Brody and Leighton Meeste,r we really had no idea what to expect from the film. But playing to huge laughs, this winning comedy overcomes some of its patchier elements to become a bonafide crowd pleaser.

Frederick Wiseman's 'Crazy Horse,' Jean Marc-Vallee's 'Cafe De Flore' Head Up Venice Days Line-UpAnnoyingly, the fall film festivals seem to have gotten together and decided to release all their news at the same time, on the same day: just as Toronto was unveiling its line-up, Venice has now announced their closing film, ahead of the full line-up being revealed on Thursday. We already know that George Clooney's "The Ides of March" will open the festival on August 31st, rumors are flying thick and fast about the rest of the line-up, and now, we know the closer, which will wrap things up on September 10th. And it's a doozy.

This business moves fast. We'd barely finished hitting 'publish' on a post about "Community" star Gillian Jacobs joining the Steve Carell/Keira Knightley comedy-drama "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," and our inbox pinged with a press release from Focus Features, who recently acquired the film. As it turns out, Jacobs wasn't the only actor to come on board the film recently.

Most comedians, once they're anointed stars, use their newfound fame to sign on to seemingly dozens of projects, reaching a kind of overexposure in speedy time. After the success of "The 40 Year Old Virgin," it seemed as though Steve Carell was heading that way, with the likes of "Evan Almighty" and "Get Smart," roles that could have been filled by any comic star, clogging up his big screen appearances. But to his credit, now that he's freeing up his schedule by departing "The Office" last week, he's taking on more interesting roles -- the excellent-looking comedy "Crazy, Stupid, Love" lands this summer, and he's got more dramatic projects like "Great Hope Springs," opposite Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones, and the oddity "Dogs of Babel" on his slate alongside more straightforward fare like "Burt Wonderstone."
