We're a little under 24 hours away from the arrival of the 2014 Oscar nominations: tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. EST/5:30 a.m. PST, Chris Hemsworth will drag his space viking physique out of bed to join Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs in reading out the nominations. We made our predictions yesterday, and as you've seen, many of the categories are still in flux, with the potential for lots of shocks and surprises to follow tomorrow morning.

Vanity Fair loves the ladies. For their annual Hollywood issue the magazine has once again gone with hot young things for their cover, making it three straight years the boys have left off from strutting their stuff (excluding the 2009 issue which for some reason had Barack Obama fronting the issue). But also as usual, it's hard to argue with their choices for the most part with Rooney Mara, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence selected for the cover.

Listen, we understand that sometimes in order to get some attention, indie films need glib comparisons and word out of Sundance this year was that Dee Rees' "Pariah" was this year's "Precious." However, not only is "Pariah" nothing like "Precious", it is so much better and so much more rewarding than anything Lee Daniels' "achieved" with his hysterical, exploitative, ghetto soap opera porno. Real in ways few movies ever are, "Pariah" mixes the coming out and coming-of-age story and pitches it against the backdrop of an African-American family adapting to the shifting cultural sexual tides. The result is a film that is warm and raw, sometimes both at the same time, and is easily one our favorites of the year.

We're really not sure what's up with the Indigo Girls meets Sarah McLachlan acoustic song that's going on in the beginning of this trailer (ok, we do, but really?), but "Pariah," a 2011 drama that was shown at Sundance 2011 to major acclaim, subsequently picked up by Focus Features, looks pretty damn great.

Every year, the Sundance Film Festival serves not only as a showcase of the best of independent cinema from around the world, but as a strong indicator of some of the rising talent likely to make waves in future years. As much as the festival showcases young writers and directors, it's for its instant creation of movie stars that it's perhaps become best known in recent years.
