Review: John Michael McDonagh's Inventive, Masterful Black Comedy 'Calvary'

Something black and acidic runs through the veins of those McDonagh brothers; there’s just something not quite right with these lads...and thank goodness for that. Playwright and younger sibling Martin McDonagh made a splash in Ireland’s theater scene with his hilarious, tart, pitch-black plays and then impressed film audiences with two wicked black comedies (“In Bruges” and “Seven Psychopaths”). Older bro John Michael McDonagh possesses a similar talent, and an ear for devilish dialogue, and having penned “Ned Kelly,” he made his feature-length debut with the cheeky, underrated black comedy “The Guard” (underrated internationally, that is; the film is the most successful Irish film of all time in Ireland). If you don’t know these guys, you need to remedy that immediately.

There are few directors who could find comedy in the premise of a priest who has been mysteriously told by an unidentified man that he'll be killed. But then perhaps you're not familiar with John Michael McDonagh, who put himself on the cinematic map with outrageous "The Guard," and returns with "Calvary." And today we have a batch of exclusive pics from the film.

Game of Thrones' Season 4 - The Mountain and the Viper'
We're back after a week off, and it's time to dive back into the wacky world of Westeros. There's another easter egg in the opening credits this week — Moat Cailin makes an appearance, the geography of the show growing with each episode. "The Mountain and the Viper," directed by Alex Graves (you might remember him from Joffrey's Purple Wedding), has promised us the trial by combat, the showdown and revenge we've been waiting for this whole season, and we're going to get it… right after all of these hideously boring monologues. The episode is a series of rather long, wordy, staid scenes bookended with bursts of bloody violence. A few of the monologues could stand to have been heavily edited, and time was checked during the show, a truly rare occurrence.
