Alex Pettyfer Also Reportedly Offered RoleIf director Lee Daniels can't choose a directorial follow-up to his Sundance indie hit, "Precious," it's not for lack of trying. The filmmaker has myriad options including the Civil Right-era drama "Selma" (which might be shelved because no studio cares about civil rights films anymore) and "The Butler" starring Denzel Washington as Eugene Allen an African-American butler that served the White House for 34 years and 8 presidents. The problem is none of those films are in eye-popping 3D, feature super heroes in tight pants and/or aren't part nine of some kid magician series, so no one's really interested in funding them. Three other gestating projects, a musical ("The Scottsboro Boys"), a remake of Fellini’s "Nights of Cabiria," and a literary adaptation that takes place during the 1920s cigar industry ("Anna In the Tropics"), all have as much chance of being made as "Calculus Math Textbook: The Movie."

Review: 'I Am Number Four' Is A Sci-Fi 'Twilight' With a Sense of Humor

Based on a novel co-authored by shamed memoirist James Frey, "I Am Number Four" is a sci-fi take on the same sort of material that has made 'Twilight' an international sensation. Instead of sparkly vampires, though, it's a handsome, hounded alien played by Alex Pettyfer that takes center stage. And while it succeeds in some respects, particularly in the fact that it has a sense of humor and some jaunty action set pieces, it all too often falls into the same draggy aimlessness that largely defines the 'Twilight' franchise.

Alex Pettyfer is about to have a moment. The 20 year old thesp has a major star vehicle, "I Am Number Four" hitting next week and "Beastly" in March, and has a handful of projects on his potential plate including "The Seventh Son," which Jeff Bridges recently boarded. But apparently he's ruffled a bit too many feathers, leading to a near-scolding piece from THR about his somewhat difficult reputation.

Rising Star Turns Down 'Mortal Instruments' With his starring role in "I Am Number Four" in a few weeks, "Beastly" next month, and Andrew Niccol's "Now" later in the year Alex Pettyfer is swiftly becoming to the sub-genre of movies-that-Amazon-recommends-when-you-order-a-copy-of-"Twilight" what Tyler Perry is to films about African-American families. Among various projects the 20-year-old actor has percolating are a biopic of racing driver James Hunt, the young-adult-aimed "Jack the Giant Killer" and, as of a couple of weeks ago, Screen Gems' adaptation of the popular "Mortal Instruments" series by Cassandra Clare, in which Pettyfer was being aggressively courted to star in as a demon hunter, alongside "The Blind Side" star Lily Collins.

With the "Twilight" series finally set to come to an end next year (it's only two years since the first film debuted, but it still feels interminable), the search is on for the next hot teen franchise, with seemingly every series of young adult novels being optioned and fast-tracked to the screen. The man who seems to be dominating the subgenre at present is 20-year-old British actor Alex Pettyfer, who's gone from starring in the abominable teen-Bond flick "Stormbreaker" to being one of the hottest young actors in Hollywood.

We were a little confused a few months back when it appeared that Dreamworks were releasing a sequel to the Doug Liman/Hayden Christensen sci-fi flop "Jumper." As it turned out, it was actually the trailer for a film called "I Am Number Four," an adaptation of the young adult novel by Oprah nemesis James Frey and co-writer Jobie Hughes, about an exiled alien, the titular number four, on the run from the rival extraterrestrial race that wiped out his people.

Matt Bomer Also Joins 'Now'; Max Irons Also In The Mix For 'Giant Killer'When the New York Times reported over the weekend, in the midst of their article about DreamWorks, that Alex Pettyfer, the lead in the upcoming teens-and-aliens flick "I Am Number Four," was being groomed as the next Shia LaBeouf, we believed it. Now Monday morning, the actor has joined one high profile project, is being considered for another and is attached to a developing biopic. Not bad for an actor that until now was best known for playing the lead in "Alex Rider: Stormbreaker."
