Elysium Matt Damon
The year is 2154, and while the future may include ships that reach supersonic speeds in fifteen seconds, and advanced weaponry and technology that now interacts directly with the human body, the divide between the haves and have nots has never been greater. Los Angeles has essentially become one large barrio, a dirty, garbage-filled, decaying city that is a bleak portrait of what could happen if the current and growing prison industrial complex expands at a prodigious rate. Crime is so high that lawbreakers and potential lawbreakers are patrolled and monitored by ruthlessly efficient robots walking the beat, while those who are charged are processed in such volume that it might as well be the DMV. And one of those put through the system is Max De Costa (Matt Damon), an ex-con on parole, trying to go straight after a checkered past. And these are the building blocks of an expansive world created by Neill Blomkamp in "Elysium," a brainy sci-fi effort that doesn't skimp on its blockbuster requirements, and delivers one of the most satisfying films of the summer.

Gael Garcia Bernal has made such a name for himself over the years, naturally any project he gets involved with these days will perk our interest. He most recently starred in “No,” the Chilean film which garnered acclaimed when it debuted in Cannes last May, leading to an eventual Foreign Language Oscar nomination. Now Participant Media, the studio that produced “No,” looks to get involved with the Mexican actor once again, this time heading out east to Argentina.

Matt Damon, Elysium
In case you haven't been on the internet in the past 24 hours, Sony has broken open the doors on Neill Blomkamp's until now secretive sci-fi "Elysium." Press got a dose of ten minutes of footage yesterday (read our breakdown right here), along with the trailer you're about to see below. And even more, Blomkamp talked up the movie, his desire for "Aliens"-style slime and eggs in his next movie and his thoughts on "Halo" and taking on pre-existing franchises already.

Elysium, Alice Braga
After its buzz-ridden San Diego Comic Con appearance last year was swiftly deflated by a release change from this past March to later this summer, “District 9” director Neill Blomkamp’s sophomore sci-fi effort “Elysium” was in dire need of a resurgence of interest. Well, consider that challenge met, as on the eve of their premiere trailer debut, Sony screened about 10 minutes of the film to press and fans, and the results were nothing short of spectacular.

Elysium, Alice Braga
After the fantastically inventive "District 9," director Neill Blomkamp's "Elysium" should be one of the most anticipated sci-films of 2013. And it is in many quarters, including ours -- see our Most Anticipated Films of 2013 list -- but it's clear that the momentum for the film has cooled, and the "will this movie ever come out" feeling has even registered.

Did you know that Walter Salles and screenwriter Jose Rivera have three more unproduced screenplays? Or that Rivera isn't exactly thrilled that some of the lines in "On The Road" were adlibbed? Or that Salles was contractually obligated to bring in an edit of two hours? In case you missed it, those are some of the fascinating highlights from Rivera's presentation of the movie at BAM over the weekend and you can read our full recap right here. And after you've done that, take a look at the below...

Greg Mclean didn't exactly replicate the success of his break-out horror flick "Wolf Creek" with croc-thriller follow-up "Rogue." And while it seemed he was set to shoot a sequel to "Wolf Creek" early this year, legal troubles have since delayed the production, with no end in sight. The delay, however, might just be a blessing in disguise, with the helmer now set to tackle a new Australian thriller with an exciting cast in tow.

Since the moment we walked out of "District 9," buzzing with the energy and invention of the picture, we, like you, have been keenly awaiting more work from South African director Neill Blomkamp. And after a heap of speculation -- the Blomkamp directing "The Hobbit" rumor must have raised its head a good half-dozen times -- the helmer's follow-up was finally announced at the end of last year as the mysterious sci-fi project "Elysium."
