How many women does it take to greenlight a movie about folk legends Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon and Carole King? Well, more than one at any rate as the developing biopic "Girls Like Us" continues moving at Sony. Back in the spring Taylor Swift and Alison Pill were contending for the parts of Mitchell and King, and while the former seems to have gone through, the latter is facing some competition, as more actresses line up to play Simon. And it's a pretty strong list of talent in the mix.

The longer Aaron Sorkin’s deeply-nostalgic-for-the-golden-age-of-news show “The Newsroom” goes on for, the more improbable the workplace drama (and dramedy), set at a fictional cable-news show, becomes. A complacent and apathetic news anchor known as the MOR Jay Leno of news anchor suddenly explodes with outrage and opinion. An old school news division president orchestrates a brilliant subterfuge in order get back to “real” journalism and an executive news producer genuinely believes that if you build it will they will come -- that the American public is starved for authenticity and will tune in for honest to goodness reporting instead of sensational TV journalism.

It feels odd that "Goon," a brutal comedy based around the sport, from the pen of hockey-loving Apatow grads Jay Baruchel (star of "Undeclared" and "Knocked Up") and Evan Goldberg (co-writer, with Seth Rogen, of "Superbad" and "Pineapple Express"), would go on wide release in Britain this weekend, weeks before it hits theaters in North America. But nevertheless, go on wide release it has, and The Playlist was there to check it out.

With a new geographically-specific title and a summer release just announced, Woody Allen's latest Euro-flavored venture, "To Rome With Love," is just around the corner. Looking to replicate the success of "Midnight In Paris," a career-best box office hit that won Allen his first writing Oscar since 1987 for "Hannah And Her Sisters," details of his latest film are being kept under wraps. With "Midnight In Paris" getting some of the best reviews Allen has received in years, and hitting the box office with a force the director's works haven't seen in decades, it seems like the helmer is on a new peak with his career. As per usual, he's already at work on his next film, continuing his pace of one movie per year, and today the full cast has been announced with a couple of exciting additions.

Broadway Stars John Gallagher Jr and Thomas Sadoski Also On Board For HBO PilotOn the special features of the DVD for "The Social Network," actor Josh Pence admits that he was devastated when he discovered that he'd been cast in a major role in a new David Fincher film, but that his face and voice would never be heard on screen. Pence provided the body of Tyler Winklevoss, but co-star Armie Hammer's face was digitally inserted on the body, to maintain the illusion of identical twin-dom. But the graciousness of Hammer and Fincher on the publicity circuit ensured that Pence's name got out there, and he hasn't done too badly off it, landing supporting roles in two of next summer's biggest movies: as Chief Moore in Peter Berg's "Battleship," and as the younger version of Liam Neeson's character Ra's Al Ghul in "The Dark Knight Rises."

They say there's no such thing as a job for life these days, but the cast of NBC's long-running procedural "Law & Order" must have thought they had the closest thing to one until the show was canceled last year, on the verge of its 20th season. But rather than slipping quietly away into retirement, 70-year-old Sam Waterston, who played District Attorney Jack McCoy on the show for a whopping sixteen years, across 368 episodes, has just booked a new gig, and he couldn't have asked for one with a better pedigree.

Generally speaking, HBO keeps going from strength to strength. 2011 has already brought the most involving "Cinema Verite," the increasingly gripping "Game of Thrones" (which is more than worth checking out, even if you're allergic to fantasy) and Todd Haynes' wonderful "Mildred Pierce," and their upcoming slate includes work from the likes of Michael Mann, David Milch, Armando Ianucci, Lena Dunham, Judd Apatow and Mike White, with projects in development with Michael Chabon, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Zach Galifianakis and Neil Gaiman, among many, many others.
