Matthew Lillard's Comeback Continues, Joins Clint Eastwood & Amy Adams In 'Trouble With The Curve'

While we, or at least this writer, had a number of problems with "The Descendants," the actors were not one of them. From leads George Clooney and Shailene Woodley to brief supporting roles from the likes of Judy Greer, Robert Forster and Rob Huebel, everyone pretty much brought their A-game, and no performance in the film was more surprising than that of Matthew Lilllard. The actor, who broke out in "Scream" before going on to play Shaggy in the two "Scooby Doo" movies, had been absent from the big screen for nearly five years, but gave a terrific little performance in a key role, one very different from the kind of part he'd played in the past.

With "J. Edgar" now in theaters (sidenote: don't believe the vitriolic reviews, it's uneven, but lots to admire) Clint Eastwood has a bit of free time. His next film is supposed to be "A Star Is Born," but with the lead star, Beyoncé preggers, production has been put on hold. So what's he gonna do instead? Take a lead role in "Trouble With The Curve," the directorial debut of his longtime colleague, friend and Malpaso Productions pal Robert Lorenz. While Sandra Bullock was one of the first names to be looking at the co-starring role, she has moved on and now two more names have surfaced.

It's been well documented how much John Carpenter loves and is influenced by classic westerns – his breakthrough feature "Assault on Precinct 13" was an updated, urbanized version of Howard Hawks' "Rio Bravo;" his iconic Snake Plissken character is modeled after the western heroes John Wayne embodied; and his films often share a kind of compositional identity with early westerns with an emphasis on the kind of luxurious widescreen framing that Sergio Leone and John Ford employed. But he's never actually made an honest-to-god western himself, although 1998's mostly forgettable "Vampires," with James Woods playing a grizzled vampire hunter, probably comes closest. Well, if Carpenter has his way, his next film will be the straight up western he's always dreamed of (and he even has casting ideas already).

One of the most anticipated moments of Disney’s D23 Studio Presentation today at the Anaheim convention center was the presentation of “The Muppets,” which is nearing its November 23rd release date.

It's not been a banner year for The Playlist's inner child. We've been spoiled in recent years, admittedly, but even the better kids flicks of the year so far, like "Rango" and "Kung Fu Panda 2," seem aimed at adults more than children, drawing on the Western and martial arts genres, but neglecting the sense of inner wonder that's so necessary, leaving "Super 8" as the only film that's really scratched that particular itch.

The wheels are now turning very fast on Paul Thomas Anderson's untitled religious flick, aka "The Master." Yesterday saw Jesse Plemons, David Warshofsky and Laura Dern and earlier today we confirmed Swedish actress Lena Endre joined the cast. Now another long-linked name has signed on the dotted line.

Not only does Paul Thomas Anderson's brewing untitled quasi-Scientology flick, formerly known as "The Master," now have a distributor in The Weinstein Company, but Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix are set to star, according to Deadline, with a June start now scheduled.

Things aren't in a good place right now for Universal's "Snow White And The Huntsman." Their competitors over at Relativity already have Julia Roberts and Lily Collins ready to go in the Tarsem directed Snow White movie that's going to hit theaters on June 29, 2012—six months before Universal's entry. With Viggo Mortensen already having moved on, last week it was reported that the studio was talking to the now available Hugh Jackman to take on the part, but it appears those efforts have gone unrewarded.

After shacking up with Batman's brother in "The Fighter," Amy Adams is set to become Superman's dame. According to the L.A. Times, Zack Snyder has found his Lois Lane for the upcoming "Superman" project slated for a late 2012 release, and it's Oscar nominee Adams, who will step into the iconic workaholic high heels. If the rumors are to be believed (and not all of them are), Adams beat out less-pedigreed competition in Kristen Stewart, Jessica Biel, Rachel McAdams, Malin Ackerman, Dianna Agron, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde, Mila Kunis, Lindsay Lohan, Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, Abe Vigoda, Bristol Palin, Justin Bartha, Elizabeth Bathory, Ms. Pac-Man... rumors are rumors, we suppose.
