Man Of Steel
In the opening scenes of Zack Snyder's “Man of Steel,” the planet of Krypton announces itself with the director's customary visual smorgasbord: canyons bathed in stark golden light, frenzied aerial battles for the planet's future, and a host of CGI creatures and machinery zipping around. It is a garish, worrying sight, saved finally by silence, as a mother laments her son's future on Earth. “We'll never see him walk,” Lara Lor-Van (Ayalet Zurer) quietly says to her husband, Jor-El (Russell Crowe, solid throughout his considerable role). The line connects, both actors retrieving the film from gaudy chaos for a moment of humanity; the child departs, leaving his parents to their planet's fate. Thankfully, down on Earth, we proceed to see him walk, run, and then fly in Snyder's impressive, bold take on the Superman mythology -- one that strains under its helmer's indulgent action tendencies, but succeeds on heart where brawn will not.

Geez, it's been two days since we last wrote about "Man Of Steel," which in Marketing Years is practically a lifetime. So we'll start off your day with a plethora of new goodies as we're now just over a week away from the film hitting theaters. And it starts off with two clips from the flick.

Man of Steel, Superman
While we're still a way off from anything on the verdict for the actual movie, the marketing for "Man Of Steel" continues to be the best of the summer so far. Everyone on the Warner Bros. team is leaning on selling an epic experience and this latest TV spot is now different.

Man Of Steel, Henry Cavill
Over the weekend when the "Man Of Steel" viral hit -- "revealing" Michael Shannon's General Zod threatening the Earth -- some uber nerds complained that he was speaking perfect English and didn't have a Kryptonian accent or anything, proving that people will complain about anything. But for the rest of us, "Man Of Steel" is hopefully going to be the superhero highlight (we hope) of the summer, a movie that will flex both brains and brawn and this evening, a brand new trailer has arrived.

Okay, while we might prefer the original working title "American Bullshit," it probably would've created a marketing nightmare, so the official replacement? Yeah, it's not too shabby at all.

American Hustle Christian Bale Amy Adams
"They're all going to do things we haven't seen them do in this movie, it's going to be very exciting. Jeremy Renner's going to be like you've never seen him. Bradley Cooper’s going to be like you never seen him. Christian Bale's going to be like you've never seen him before,” David O. Russell told us late last year when we spoke to him during “Silver Linings Playbook” press rounds about his currently-filming, still-untitled, based-on-a-true-story FBI ABSCAM drama/dramedy (or maybe full-on comedy?) Russell added, “they're all playing real-life characters from the ‘70s and they're very intense in an insane drama."

Tim Burton Amy Adams Christoph Waltz Big Eyes
So, where do we start with "Big Eyes"? Well, let's go with a brief history lesson. Developing for at least six years if not longer, the project comes from Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski ("Ed Wood," "The People Vs. Larry Flynt," "Man On The Moon") and with two big lead roles, over the years Thomas Haden Church and Kate Hudson became attached, and in 2012 Ryan Reynolds and Reese Witherspoon were linked, with Tim Burton slated to produce the effort that would serve as the screenwriters' directorial debut. But it looks Burton is going to take it all for himself with a pretty killer leading duo.

While going down on Michelle Williams and the impressive structure of Michael Fassbender's dong made the MPAA all hot and NC-17 bothered about "Blue Valentine" and "Shame," it seems they are totally cool with handjobs. "Hyde Park On Hudson," "The Sessions" and "On The Road" all feature people getting stroked off (a car seems to be a popular place) and even Paul Thomas Anderson's cryptic wonder "The Master" takes a moment to squeeze one out. But think we're cool about it? In Japan, it ain't no thing.

There will probably be no movie this summer with a marketing campaign as controlled as the one for "Man Of Steel." Why? Two words: Christopher Nolan. The executive producer seems to be bringing this Batman levels of secrecy to the movie, with the plot still pretty much under lock and key, and with only a couple of trailers appearing so far. As for official stills? We've been reduced to magazine scans as Warner Bros. keeps everything in their vault for now, so the pics below will have to suffice.

There are two schools of though on movie marketing when it comes to blockbusters: carpet bomb the fuck out of the advertising or play it close to the chest. 20th Century Fox tends to do the former, as campaigns for "X-Men: First Class" and "Prometheus" bear witness. But Christopher Nolan and co. take the latter approach, with each move carefully coordinated with the precision of a hit squad. So yes, this is not much more than a magazine cover, but it's a new look at Zack Snyder's "Man Of Steel," so we'll take what we can get.
