Janis Joplin Biopic Starring Amy Adams Back On, Lee Daniels To Direct

The year was 2010, and at the time Amy Adams was attached to play famed rocker Janis Joplin with "City Of God" helmer Fernando Meirelles to helm. Or that was at least the plan. And then there was nothing heard again about a biopic until earlier this year when "Martha Marcy May Marlene" helmer Sean Durkin signed up for "Joplin" with Nina Arianda in the lead role. And now, there is some fierce competition from Adams, as her movie is back moving, not only eyeing a similar start date but bringing a name director along with it.

Our Oscars coverage has, over the last few months, principally focused on the Best Picture race, which makes sense as what films look like possibilities continues to come into focus. But with the dust now settled on the festival season (well, except for the New York Film Festival getting underway today), we want to come in a little tighter, as it were, and start to think about the individual categories.

Despite a recent mishap involving an empty chair meant to be President Barack Obama, actor Clint Eastwood has been relatively out of sight when it comes to the press. He mostly turns up at awards shows come January every year or so, and he’s perhaps best known at this point for his work behind the camera on mainstream fare, intelligent or even thought-provoking entertainment like “Letters to Iwo Jima” and “Mystic River” -- or far less savory works like “Hereafter,” and the well-intentioned misfire of a biopic in 2011’s Oscar bait “J. Edgar.” There’s little doubt the actor/director will maintain his iconic status until his final days, but “Trouble with the Curve” finds Eastwood on cranky autopilot.

On the last day of the Republican National Convention, it's possible that that sound you heard was that of heart palpitations over at Warner Bros' marketing department. After seemingly retiring from acting after "Gran Torino," Clint Eastwood used a gap in his schedule caused by the delay to his remake of "A Star Is Born" to return to the front of the camera, starring in the directorial debut of long-time collaborator Robert Lorenz. And given his immense star power, the fact that he's never won a Best Actor Oscar, and the bait-y subject matter (Eastwood plays a veteran baseball coach leading his sight), many thought the performance, if not the film, could be one to watch in the awards race this time around.

No movie has been more keenly anticipated by cinephiles in 2012 than Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master.” The filmmaker has been one of cinema’s most exciting new voices for a decade and a half now, but reached a new level of adulation with his last picture, ”There Will Be Blood,” which won awards and topped critical lists the world over five years ago. As such, the genesis and production of “The Master” was avidly followed, not least because the film was long ago said to revolve around a fictionalized surrogate of L. Ron Hubbard and his ever-controversial Scientology, and because Anderson had shot the film on 70mm film, the first major production to do so since Kenneth Branagh’s “Hamlet” in 1996.

Okay, this isn't entirely revealing stuff we sort of didn't already know, but considering how shrouded in mystery Spike Jonze's next feature is, this is a pretty nice new bit of official information. But before we get to it let's just recap for a moment. The new film, Jonze's first full length effort since 2009's sublime "Where the Wild Things Are," stars Joaquin Phoenix with a trio of leading ladies in "The Master" co-star Amy Adams, Rooney Mara and Olivia Wilde. Plot details thus were said to center on a man who fell in love with a Siri-like voice. But that's not quite accurate.

With Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" heading full-steam into its official premiere at Venice (though it has already screened "unfinished" in a handful of cities), the one overriding message from everyone involved thus far is: it's not about Scientology. And indeed, our own review said that "while those looking for a scathing indictment of any well-publicized religion are certain to find similarities, in some cases even direct parallels, Anderson never creates an atmosphere of outright derision." And it's that statement Amy Adams was presumably trying to get across in her appearance on "Late Night With David Letterman" last night, before she was interrupted numerous times by the host who couldn't help himself by mentioning Scientology numerous times.

While for most prestigious movies, audiences have to wait until after their high-falutin' red carpet festival premieres before they can see it for themselves, with "The Master," Paul Thomas Anderson is changing the game. The film had its first surprise public screening Santa Monica at the beginning of the month, had a last minute fundraising showing in Chicago last week (see our review here), and over the weekend, had two more unannounced unveilings in New York City. But even so, the curtain has been somewhat closed on the movie from the filmmaker himself, but in his first interview about the film, Paul Thomas Anderson shares his inspirations and frustrations about getting the movie out there.

For a while, it looked like we had the 2013 Oscar host locked down. After a disappointing few years (Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin felt constrained, Anne Hathaway and James Franco were a flat out disaster, and Billy Crystal was kind of creaky last year), it seemed like we'd be getting some fresh blood, and that did seem to have been the case: "Saturday Night Live" mastermind Lorne Michaels was said to have been approached, and was planning on bringing on one of his former stars, "Late Night" host Jimmy Fallon.
