Penny Dreadful
With his Oscar contender "Big Eyes" starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz coming soon, those who prefer Burton's more whimsical movies shouldn't worry. Early next year he's gearing up an adaptation of Ranson Riggs’ “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” and he's got his eye on a former collaborator for a role.

THR Roundtable Andy Samberg Tony Hale
The Emmys are around the corner, which means that while the movie world is busy putting their latest summer spectacles on the big screen, the TV industry is doing their awards season jaunt. That means lots of face time with the people who make your favorite shows happen, and if you're a fan of comedy, you'll want to set aside some time for this.

Aubrey Plaza, Johnny Simmons and Donald Glover in The To Do List
What's on your to do list this summer? Maybe get a job, ask that girl or guy out who works at that store downtown and perhaps spend some long weekends with some friends. Either way, we're betting your list isn't quite the same as Brandy's in "The To Do List." Unless handjobs are an essential part of your summer plans....

This week concluded the yearly "up-fronts," where advertisers and affiliates convene in New York City so that the various networks can trot out their exciting new fall products. It brings an end to "pilot season," in which initial episodes are furiously produced and then handily judged, and kicks off the excitement for the following fall. (Even though, as we're becoming increasingly aware, the traditional notions of when shows are supposed to air and how long they're supposed to be are blurring considerably.) Out of all of the new shows – dozens and dozens of hours of freshly scripted content – we have chosen the ten shows that we find the most promising; five hour-long dramas and five sitcoms. Don't change that dial.

While David Bowie's new music video represents the very heights of the format, with ambitious visuals, important themes and high production values, then the latest from The Lonely Island is the counterweight to that. Goofy, hilarious, and probably shot in about two days, it might not boast the biggest ideas or highest aspirations, but it's still pretty rad.

So, this summer marks a not so momentous occasion: "Grown Ups 2" is the first Adam Sandler sequel. And in making the followup to the smash hit "Grown Ups" -- a movie we still have a tough time believing anyone actually liked, even though lots of people went to see it for some reason -- Sandler rounded up some extra help to join his regular crew. And we never though we would type this but it's come to the point where Taylor Lautner is now funnier than Adam Sandler. Really.

Well, there will be no other movies this year that will make a leak/leek pun, so in that regard, "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2" stands alone. But it's also going to be the only movie this year with food that talks. And swims. And drives boats.

If somehow you still watched The Independent Spirit Awards late last night, despite the winners being announced hours earlier, then this is old news. But if you're like most of us and didn't, well here's a little bit of catch-up before the Oscars roll out in just a few hours.

Pilot season is moving right along, and the still-untitled cop comedy pilot starring Andy Samberg that was set up last fall has some new blood. Directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller are set to be at the helm, while Terry Crews will costar. The project is one of six comedy pilots to be picked up by Fox so far, and comes from Mike Schur and Dan Goor, the creators of “Parks and Recreation,” so it’s shaping up to be a powerhouse team.
