It may seem like a while ago, but at the tail end of 2011, heat started to build up around a movie featuring the blockbuster pairing of star Angelina Joile and director Luc Besson. Universal Pictures snapped up 80% of the worldwide distribution rights to the movie and then...Jolie decided to make "Maleficent" next. But not to worry, this project is still very much on schedule and it looks like it will be going up next for both Jolie and Besson.

With Disney giving Angelina Jolie's big fairy tale movie "Maleficent" a March 14, 2014 release date yesterday, will the actress have time to squeeze in another movie before cameras roll this summer? If so, it will be one of the hottest projects brewing.

If ain't broke, don't fix it. While "John Carter" and "Mars Needs Moms" didn't exactly match the billion dollar success of Disney's 2010 spring entry "Alice In Wonderland," the studio is sticking with March as their early season tentpole date, and are hoping that Angelina Jolie can right the ship after two years of spring flops.

Discuss: Who, If Any, Of The Current Crop Of Leading Ladies Are Reliable Box-Office Draws?

Put simply, the number of actreses who can be deemed consistent box office draws seems to diminish, rather than grow, as each year goes on. In part, it's because it's so rare for the major blockbusters to be lead by a woman: of the top 20 worldwide grossers last year, only "Twilight" could arguably be said to be led by a woman, and holding up those films as a victory for womankind would be an error, given their prehistoric sexual politics. 2010 was a little better, thanks to "Black Swan" and "Alice in Wonderland," but not much

Angelina Jolie is hardly prolific when it comes to churning out movies of late, and even less prolific when it comes to churning out good ones. When she does appear in movies she does so as one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, and as a result she's likely one of the most in-demand actresses around which suggests she must be very selective. But that just makes it all the more confusing when she picks some of the projects she does. Aside from voicing a tiger in the two "Kung Fu Panda" movies, the past five years has seen Jolie make six movies. Two were quite good ("A Mighty Heart," "Changeling"), two were not ("Beowulf," "The Tourist") and two were disappointing action movies ("Wanted," "Salt").

After a year spent canceling a bunch of projects, ranging from R-rated fare like "At The Mountains Of Madness," potential awards season dramas like "Memphis," ambitious multi-platform franchise endeavors like "The Dark Tower" and a slate of bad idea brand movies like "Ouija," it looks like Univeral is ready to roll the dice on an original project once again. That it has one of the biggest movie stars on the planet in a lead role certainly doesn't hurt.
