When Christopher Nolan or his associates call, you pick up the phone, and Rebecca Hall certainly did, joining Nolan Cohort Wally Pfister's directorial debut "Transcendence." but that left Lynn Shelton with a bit of a problem. She needed a lead for her upcoming "Laggies," which Hall had been circling, but the director soon landed Anne Hathaway. But again, the gravitational pull of the Nolan juggernaut meant that didn't quite work out either, as she went on to do Nolan's "Interstellar."

At some point in the last few months, everyone decided it was time to pour some haterade on Anne Hathaway for some reason. It's gotten to the point where the New York Times even did an entire article about it for some reason. Frankly, we don't get it -- she's an excellent actress, who has had some great success, which we suppose makes some people jealous or whatever -- but, Christopher Nolan doesn't read internet gossip and trash and realizes talent when it's in front of him.

So is Lynn Shelton having her Joe Swanberg moment? The mumblecore directo recently pivoted toward the mainstream with "Drinking Buddies" starring Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick and more, and while Shelton last delivered "Your Sister's Sister" featuring Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt and "Touchy Feely" with DeWitt and Ellen Page, her latest lines up an Oscar winner, a rising young actress and more and what could definitely be a project that will help her reach her widest audience audience yet.

We’re betting that pretty much every A-lister out there has an early acting gig that they’d be happy never saw the light of day. Unluckily for Anne Hathaway and Jean Dujardin, the internet will always uncover those embarrassing early jobs sooner or later, and their time is now. Take a look at a couple of early ads that the now Oscar-winners made before they were famous.

Missed the 85th Academy Awards last night for some reason? Not into it? Just sort of put off by Seth MacFarlane's perennially self-satisfied and smug smirk? Perhaps you watched, but went to bed during the 6th hour when you knew there were still 45 nominations to go? We can't fault you either way, but in case you happened to miss the show -- the full list of winners is here -- or just got sick of how longwinded and or overly musical it was, you can watch the entire thing on Hulu. Hell, we won't even spoil it for you in case you missed it, but if you did, we warn you, it was long, erratically paced (slow and then hurried and then slow again) and the jokes were funny and then they weren't. Inconsistency was the name of the game.

Despite what whoever was pressing the "Jaws" theme button last night believes, the highlights of the annual Academy Awards tend not to be the montages and dance numbers, but the speeches. It's the moment where an actor or artist is rewarded by their peers, and thanks the Academy with wit, graciousness, charm, enormous egotism, or perhaps a bit of all the above.

Around this time last year, "Les Misérables" was still a speck in Oscar prognosticators' eyes, but perhaps Anne Hathaway already sensed her pipes would be taking her places. With the actress seen as a virtual lock to take home a statue this weekend, it looks like she wants to keep on singing. Last May, she started eyeing the movie "Song One," a picture she was slated to produce but wasn't yet locked to star in, but it looks like the wheels are in motion and some very interesting talent will helping to put this one together.

Yesterday, we began our coverage counting down to the 85th Academy Awards next Sunday, by taking a look at some of the best early performances of the Best Supporting Actor nominees. So today, the only natural place to go was across the gender divide, to the Best Supporting Actress contenders. And as with their male counterparts, it's a mostly established bunch of names.

It's been a little while since Zach Galifianakis got on to the very low budget set of his talk show "Between Two Ferns," but he's back and has served up a doozy. It's Oscar time, and the actor has taken the opportunity to sit down with the nominees. The results are pretty hilarious.
