TIFF Review: 'Arthur Newman' An Intentionally Listless Story About A Boring Everyman

What if we are all Arthur Newman? This is the question that director Dante Ariola and screenwriter Becky Johnston beg in "Arthur Newman," their tepid, imaginatively uninvolved drama about two strangers that fall in love while trying to escape their banal past lives. Ariola and Johnston’s film follows a rag-tag couple, played by Colin Firth and Emily Blunt, who bond when they discover that they both want to run away from their respective families and create new lives for themselves. But because "Arthur Newman" is a drab, psychologically flat portrait of misfit lovers in the process of self-fashioning new identities, we never really learn who its two main characters aspire to be or in what new direction they want to take their lives.

Carrie Preston is best known as the ditzy-and-frustrated waitress Arlene Fowler on "True Blood" (and lately, as the ditzy-but-brilliant lawyer Elisbeth Tascioni on "The Good Wife"), but this year at Sundance, she'll be known as a film director for "That's What She Said," her sophomore feature effort behind the camera.

Review: 'Cedar Rapids' Provides A Trickle Of Laughs Instead Of A Torrent

On paper, "Cedar Rapids" sounds like a no brainer. The Frank Capra-esque premise is familiar: a small town man is sent off to the big city where he struggles to adjust to the fast pace and shifty morals of metropolitan life. And when you line up a stacked roster of talent that includes John C. Reilly, Anne Heche, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Sigourney Weaver, Alia Shawkat, Rob Corddry and Stephen Root, the movie should pretty much just write itself. Figuratively speaking, that is. But unfortunately, Miguel Arteta seems to have literally taken what was probably a great treatment and hoped that his actors and actresses could do the rest with unfortunately middling results.
