'Mirror Mirror' Team Tarsem, Lily Collins & Armie Hammer Talk The Influence Of Andrei Tarkovsky, Breaking The Fourth Wall & Not Fighting Girls

"Mirror Mirror" is the latest in a long line of Snow White stories -- "Once Upon A Time" on ABC is ongoing, as is the saga of Snow White and her Fabletown cohorts in the graphic novel series "Fables," with the film "Snow White and the Huntsman" not far behind. The Tarsem Singh-directed film, however, is the most kid-friendly of the bunch, with the evil queen character played for laughs by Julia Roberts. Even if this film only has a touch of the dark side, its stars Lily Collins and Armie Hammer insist "Mirror Mirror" is more modern, because Snow White learns to fight for herself, her prince, and her people. "Our Snow White has no huntsman," Hammer noted, "but it's an over-the-top family comedy. We're not trying to make 'Grapes of Wrath' here." And because it's a Singh film, the visuals are everything, as the two leads and the director shared with The Playlist.

Armie Hammer has just finished his first week on "The Lone Ranger" -- in which he's playing the title role. After portraying the Winklevoss twins in "The Social Network," Leonardo DiCaprio's lover in "J. Edgar," and now a Prince Charming of sorts in a Snow White film, Hammer said he's now having the time of his life playing the legendary masked man -- a role which he calls "incredible."

In the seventeen years that they've been running for, the annual Screen Actors' Guild Awards have proven to be a pretty reliable precursor for the acting categories at the Academy Awards. And why shouldn't they? With the actors who nominate their peers for the Oscars overwhelmingly being SAG members, there's always going to be a natural link, and certainly by the time the guild award their prizes, it's a good time to make a bet. In the last few years, they've only missed Penelope Cruz in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," Marion Cotillard in "La Vie En Rose" and Alan Arkin in "Little Miss Sunshine" as winners, while the nominees tend to match up heavily -- last year, seventeen out of twenty in the acting categories were the same, while all five nominees in the Outstanding Cast category won Oscar nominations.

Armie Hammer's had his fair share of ups and down across his admittedly brief career. Aged only 21, he was George Miller's choice to play Batman in "Justice League: Mortal!" But the film was scrapped only weeks before shooting. He spent a few years without major credits, before impressing as the Winkelvi in David Fincher's "The Social Network," and landed a major role in Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar" as a result! But "J. Edgar" didn't turn out to be any good.

Film Now Set For May 31, 2013 Release DateUpdate: THR reports that "The Lone Ranger" is now set for a May 31, 2013 release date. The spring date is no random place on the calendar, it's the frame Disney has utilized with tremendous success for the "Pirates Of The Caribbean" movies, so no surprise, they are following that template with this film.

There's nothing that can make a director look good in retrospect as someone else coming into the franchise that they birthed and messing it up even more than it already was, and that's what happened to Gore Verbinski in the last month or so. The second and third entries in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series might have been bloated and CGI-heavy (although not without their charms, we'd argue), but they were "Raiders of the Lost Ark" compared to Rob Marshall's recent fourth installment, and if nothing else it's reminded us that Verbinski is a more talented director than many of his tentpole competition.
