Chinese Puzzle
Already megawatt stars in France, Audrey Tautou and Romain Duris have seen their star shine across international borders too. And together they make a pretty attractive package. While they most recently teamed for Michel Gondry's "Mood Indigo," the duo are perhaps best known for their ensemble dramedies with director Cédric Klapisch, "Pot Luck" and "Russian Dolls." And they've once again teamed with the filmmaker for another tale in the saga started in those movies.

Mélanie Laurent, Audrey Tautou & Bérénice Bejo Tran Anh Hung
Like the French cinematic equivalent of Voltron, three of the country's most famed actresses are joining forces for a project that has us sold on name recognition alone. That the material is promising is a nice bonus.

"Therese Desqueyroux," the closing night selection of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, is not the nuanced period drama it should be but is rather more like a banal, pseudo-thoughtful and monotonous episode of "Masterpiece Theater." Co-adapted by director Claude Miller ("A Secret," "Class Trip"), the latest adaptation of Francois Mauriac's acclaimed novel reduces the titular heroine's story to a troubled individual's struggle to retain her autonomy as a member of her oppressive husband’s family. The phrase, "For the family" is bludgeoned into viewers' heads to the point where it's very easy to ignore the fact that Therese (Audrey Tautou) is anything more than just a proto-desperate housewife. In fact, she's a fatalist because she's also an atheist, a complex concept that Miller sets up but doesn't follow through on.

So if we were to CHROME CARROTS attempt to replicate the PERSPEX LIMO omnipresent inventiveness of TINY MOUSE IN A TINY HOUSE Michel Gondry’s latest film throughout the PIANO THAT MAKES COCKTAILS course of this review, it would SUNLIGHT IS STRING get pretty old, pretty damn RUBIK’S CUBE ORGANISER quick. So we’ll stop while we still have you, which is what we deeply wish Gondry had done. But in “Mood Indigo,” which opened the Karlovy Vary Film Festival last week, the French filmmaker's gonzo homemade aesthetic is off the leash entirely, and he shows no mercy in how much gimcrackery he thinks we can handle.

What happened to our sweet Amelie? Audrey Tautou, who can usually be relied upon to look adorkable, proceeding to melt you into a puddle with little more than a coy look and a smile, puts away the pixie charm in "Therese" and gets ready to kill. Really.

There's a reason no one really remembers or talks about the Cannes Film Festival closing films...they usually aren't very good. The past few years have seen the Audrey Tautou starring "Thérèse Desqueyroux," Christoph Honoré's "The Beloved" and Charlotte Gainsbourg led "The Tree" all cap off the festivities...see what we mean? So, while any news from the Croisette is something we'll zero in on, forgive us if we're not holding our breath on this one...

One movie that is most certainly on list of movies to see in 2013 is still without a U.S. distributor despite boasting the name of Michel Gondry in the director's chair, and a cast that includes familiar arthouse faces Audrey Tautou, Romain Duris and Omar Sy. So far, we've certainly been piqued by what we've seen -- a good serving of Gondry whimsy, combined with an adaptation of a beloved novel by Boris Vian -- and these five new clips certainly raise the stakes a bit more.

With a release date in France just weeks away, and with "Mood Indigo" looking like a return to form for Michel Gondry, we're still patiently awaiting word of any kind of stateside release. The film still needs a U.S. distributor to step up and bring it to theaters, and hopefully there will be some news soon, but until then we'll just have to look from afar at what we're missing.

To put it quite simply, Michel Gondry's upcoming "Mood Indigo" looks like the return to form many fans have been waiting for. While the director has been off pursuing various other cinematic challenges, it's been a while since we've dropped into the sort of cinematic funhouse he's put up on screen in "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind," "The Science Of Sleep" or even "Be Kind Rewind" (underrated in this writer's opinion). But "Mood Indigo" looks like an utterly charming, whimsical romance and after a gorgeous first trailer in January, a brand new, equally lovely spot has emerged.

While recent efforts like the documentary "The Thorn In The Heart," the superhero blockbuster "The Green Hornet," and indie "The We And The I" have all allowed Michel Gondry to take some detours, it's been a while since we've seen a movie that's, well, Gondry-esque. But it looks like the filmmaker is firmly back in his wheelhouse with "Mood Indigo," which debuted a gorgeous trailer about a month ago. And with its spring release overseas gearing up, some fresh promo material has arrived.
