Today, believe it or not, is the four year anniversary since the theatrical release of J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek.” Time sure does move fast unless, of course, you’re a Trekkie. A brand new clip from “Star Trek Into Darkness” has just been posted online and while it’s hardly any consolation for such a long wait, you know you want to check it out anyway. Besides, the movie’s release is only a few days away. If you can wait four years, surely another couple of days couldn’t hurt… right?

Star Trek: Into Darkness
Cast your mind back four years or so, to stardate early May 2009, and remember a time when J.J Abrams wasn't yet the anointed savior of Hollywood. He had an ever-growing fanbase, and had already been behind at least one bona-fide small screen pop culture phenomenon. But his influence on the big-screen up to that point only extended to a few screenwriting credits, mostly forgotten, a producing credit on disposable sleeper hit "Cloverfield," and directing "Mission: Impossible III," an enjoyable, but somewhat interchangeable entry to the Tom Cruise spy franchise.

Star Trek: Into Darkness
These days, it's all about the international dollars, so it's no surprise that some of this year's biggest blockbusters are getting a headstart overseas. "Iron Man 3" bowed a week before we get it on Friday, while "Star Trek Into Darkness" is also getting a jump abroad before the rest of us see it. While some early reviews from Australia dropped in about a week ago, 'Darkness' has now screened for folks in UK and a fresh batch of takes have arrived. The verdict? It's a rip-roaring blockbuster, that while not perfect (a common complaint is that characterization gets left behind as the adventure amps up) will be well worth your dollars. Here's what folks had to say:

Star Trek Into Darkness, Cumberbatch
Having raised the temperature a few degrees with a tease of a nefarious Benedict Cumberbatch and some pretty thrilling trailers, details are starting emerge about what to expect from the long under-wraps storyline of J.J. Abrams' hotly anticipated space epic “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” and a new clip that just premiered is almost exclusively centered around Cumberbatch's mysterious villain John Harrison.

It seems we're in the midst of a trend of tentpole villains favoring distinct vocal deliveries. From Heath Ledger and Tom Hardy as Joker and Bane in "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises" respectively, to Javier Bardem's Silva in "Skyfall" to Leonardo DiCaprio's Calvin Candie in "Django Unchained," all added some vocal flair to the lines on the page that made those parts stand out. And now Benedict Cumberbatch will try and do it twice in 2013. He'll be behind Smaug in "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," and next month he'll gravely intone Captain Kirk and the crew's death in "Star Trek Into Darkness."

Man, London is not having a good year at the movies. Last month, it got wiped out in "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" and next month, it's gonna get trashed again in "Star Trek Into Darkness." People must have got over their Olympic fever fast....

Benedict Cumberbatch is pretty much on the precipice of stardom, if not already there. As the villain in both "Star Trek Into Darkness" and "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" this year, his wonderfully English name will be increasingly familiar to American audiences, and that's not to mention a potential awards baiting performance as Julian Assange in "The Fifth Estate" this fall. So what's next? He's gonna get some period clothes out of the closet again. Not to solve mysteries or endure various dramas, but instead to ride with whatever Guillermo del Toro is cooking up.

J.J. Abrams only lets you see what you he wants you to see, and when it comes to his films before release, it isn't much. And so it's not surprising that these two latest photos for "Star Trek Into Darkness," coming in via some kind of app for the movie, aren't exactly Earth-shattering revelations.
